Rab Baltoro Alpine Softshell Jacket Coat
The Rab Baltoro Alpine is a superb mid-weight soft shell jacket which has all the features that you would expect for alpine travel.
Two large zippered chest pockets ensure that your rucksack straps do not prevent you from reaching for your essentials. This is great for when you need a Milka bar based energy boost when trudging through the snow. There is also a generously sized internal pocket which is useful for storing items that you are not going to need so frequently such as your wallet and insurance details.
The hood is large and flexible enough such that it will stretch neatly over a helmet. An insert at the front of the hood ensures that it remains peaked rather than drooping over your face.
The cuffs have a velcro adjustment system to help you keep the weather out.
The Baltoro Alpine is constructed out of Polartec Power Shield fabric. This fabric combines a fleecy inner layer with a breathable, weather-proof outer layer. The fabric is also very durable and has enough stretch to ensure that your freedom of movement is not restricted. Although the Baltoro Alpine is not 100% waterproof like certain shell jackets, it will protect you from all but the very worst of weather.
I recently used this jacket for the Gouter route of Mont Blanc. Initially I was considering using a base layer, a fleecy mid layer and a waterproof outer such as the Rab Latok. However, in the end I decided on just using a Rab Aeon base layer along with a Baltoro Alpine jacket. We had good conditions and this turned out to be a winning combination.
