August 15, 1786-Dated Post Revolutionary War Period, Hand-Colored Engraved Map entitled, "A NEW MAP OF NORTH AMERICA WITH WEST INDIA ISLANDS." Printed for Robert Sayer, Choice Very Fine.
These two very large, impressive Hand-colored Engraved Maps are of a mated set, printed on laid finish paper on four sheets (two sheets made into one larger printed sheet), and in two parts. Each of the two large map sections measure about 48" x 21.25" having full outer margins present. The entire title reads, "A New Map of North America with West India Islands. Divided according to the Preliminary Articles of Peace, signed at Versailles, 20. Jan. 1783, wherein are particularly distinguished the United States, and the several provences, governments which compose the British Dominions; laid down according to the latest surveys, and corrected from the original materials, of Gover. Pownall, Membr. of Parliamt., 1783." One portion includes a magnificent, highly decorative and colorful Cartouche of Native American Indians and Two Inset Maps, titled: "A passage by land to California" and "A particular map of Baffin and Hudson's Bay." Also includes text of "Fishing rights as granted in Article III." The printed text inscribed at bottom reads, "Printed for Robert Sayer, Map, Chart and Printseller, 53 Fleet Street, as the Act directs August 15, 1786." This mated pair of maps is noted on their blank reverse sides as being number 30 and 31. An outstanding beautiful and rare pair that will look most impressive properly framed for display.
