This is a very interesting scientific instrument made by the well known Charles Baker of London as per the wording on the brass bulbous part.. try and FIND another item like this on GOOGLE .. you will not find any ...try and find anything at all related to this item and you get very little information other than wikipedia about the word HARMONISING .
Anyway ... see the item.. a heavy brass rod ..with a small black tapered end which has a lens in it.. as well as the silver coloured part stuck up...with another glass lens in it.. this is the EYE part.. you look through here.
On the bulbous part which is black painted brass it has C. BAKER LONDON .. on the black tapered part it has on the top as you LOOK into the eye part wording.. MILITARY CROWSFOOT ... HARMONISING TELESCOPE S/REF 50 EE /246 No. 68 .
Now then ... looking through the EYE part.. you see it has CIRCLES marked like a TARGET with an + in the centre....this eye part does SLIDE in an out ..so it comes out in your hand... its about 1 and a quarter inch long ( even though I have not photographed it doing so )...which has an inner glass too.
Looking into the tapered bit.. you can see the circles of the target get closer together the nearer the centre.
What I am told you do with this instrument is ... push the long brass part up the GUN barrell ...look at the eye part to make all the guns fire at the SAME place ... whilst sighting them in.. so it could be used on aircraft .. to make sure all guns are going to hit the target etc....I do not know what gun type its for though.
The straight brass solid rod is 3 inch long x 10/16ths - 5/8ths inch dia or 16mm dia... the eye part sticks up 8cm and the whole item weighs approx..... 417grams.
A very nice GO-WITH if you are into scientific instruments by this maker of militaria.
Please see close up pictures for more detail.
The item(s) are shown next to an English 1 penny which is 20mm dia for scale.
Conversion ... approx... 2.5cm = 25mm = 1 inch
