Rare American folk art Wax Black Character Doll by Mary McEwan. The doll has a hand-carved wax head affixed to wire framed body and has an uneasy expression. The artist McEwen is considered an outsider artist who kept herself up in her house after the death of her husband and proceeded to make hundreds of these dolls throughout the '20s and '40s many of which were of her neighbors and the children who played in the fields near her house.

This one is 17" Saches Purify, he is dressed in his best clothing, a black suit with a knit turtleneck, nice shiney shoes and a brown satin body, with a gold watch chain hanging from it. He has brown complexioned wax head with highly characterized features, brown glass googly-like eyes, fleecy black- grey real human hair, nicely had sewn costumed. He has part of a finger missing. This outfit was made, and Saches Purify was dressed by Mary McEwin.

She was born in 1866, and co-owner of the McEwan Wax Works in Milwaukee until 1910 when she and her husband moved to Seattle. She maintained her interest in wax until the 1930s, creating a many wax doll heads and complete dolls with highly characterized features, although it is believed that not more than 300/400 of the black dolls were sculpted and most were never sold until after her death and the estate closing of the family home. The dolls are highly distinctive, and quite rare ranging in price for a few hundreds to over a thousand dollars

Mary McEwan of Seattle in the first half of the 20th century, and were featured in an article in Doll News in 1981
