engineers / shafting level
A rare vintage 18" engineers / shafting spirit level in original lockable box.
This very heavy, high precision level made by the famous instrument
maker `Stanley London` not to be confused with the American Stanley tools Ltd.
Level is iron with two gun metal handles due to its weight of 5.6 kg.
The level appeared in their 1931 & 1946 catalogue number A971.
Level has a large Vee groove on underside of base for the erection of
shafting as well as for use levelling machinery, foundations etc.
Level has bubbles for both planes, both adjustable although looks to
be perfect as far as I can tell. The main level is extremely accurate, the divisions
are 20" (20 seconds, 1/ 180 of a degree or 0.001743" over the 18")
Level is in very clean condition, has numerous small chips to the black
enamel finish, the red undercoat showing through in places. Underside very
clean, no rust or damage, smooth with light scratches due to use.
Level is stamped `STANLEY LONDON` `Made In England`
The original hardwood box is in good solid condition, no loose joints but
distressed to the bottom edge, see pictures. Brass hinges are good as is the
two heavy brass `cabin hooks` and has original working box lock with its key.
Inside is felt lined, very clean, the level fitting tight with no play & is
clamped tight by the closure of the lid.
Size - 20 3/8" x 5 3/4" x 4 3/8" and heavy weighing 8.1 kg.
Level is listed for cash on collection from Chingford, London E4 6PQ
but will post although pricey due to weight.
