Country Lovers

The lively Barleybridge Veterinary Hospital is bustling with energy. Everyone is working hard to make sure that sick animals in the surgery and on the farms are treated. But at the same time some of the staff are coping with crises in their personal lives. Kate is worrying about her exam results and hoping she can get into Veterinary College. Dan's wife's baby is due any moment. Letty is worried that she may be terminally ill but is afraid to tell anyone. Joy finds that she is still in love with Mungo, a fact that finally compels her husband Duncan to leave home. Rhodri is deeply in love with Megan, a local farmer's daughter, but she can't marry him because she is committed to caring for her elderly father. A wonderfully pacy, funny but tender novel about life in the country.

A Country Affair

Kate arrives at Barleybridge Veterinary Practice on her first day as the new receptionist. The hills rise almost immediately from the edge of the car park, dotted all over the slopes are sheep grazing. Turning round she can see the town which has now crept up the foothills making the Practice the last bit of civilisation before the hills. The setting is idyllic. Kate quickly gets to know the other staff and becomes engrossed in the work and drawn into the lives of her colleagues and those of the animals and their owners. But as she gets more and more involved with the Practice, Kate realises she has a very difficult decision to make...

Country Passions

When Dan, one of the farm vets, is seriously injured in a car accident everyone at Barleybridge Animal Hospital is shocked. But they have even more to cope with when Scott Spencer, back from Australia, steps in to cover for him. Joy, the Practice Manager, remembers the hearts he broke when he last worked there and also his abrupt departure. She refuses to agree to this appointment, however temporary it turns out to be. So Joy leaves, and Scott slips seamlessly into the Practice routine. But Scott is in for a shock himself, when secrets are revealed which turn his life upside down and amend his attitude to women... COUNTRY PASSIONS is a wonderfully compelling and tender novel in which Rebecca Shaw weaves her magic around the animals and the people in this busy veterinary hospital, bringing them to life and sharing with us their troubles and triumphs.

Whispers in the Village

When the rector, Peter, takes his family to Africa for a year so that he can work in a Mission, the villagers are bereft. They don't immediately take to the locum, Anna, who has rather modern ideas - but she does fill the church with parishioners determined to keep an eye on her. Then she brings a down-and-out petty thief into their midst causing conflict within the community. Peter keeps in touch regularly by email, and the Women's Institute comes up with the idea of raising funds for his Mission. There's an upmarket pyjama party, midnight skinny dipping and an afternoon's horse racing, with more money than they dreamed of riding on a horse called Major Malpas. Then a message arrives from Peter with the most devastating news - and the villagers are more determined than ever to raise a substantial sum for Peter's Mission.

The New Rector

A Turnham Malpas Novel: 1 The new rector of Turnham Malpas is young, vigorous, and very handsome. And, as Peter Harris encounters his flock, he discovers there is more to village life than he had anticipated. The local publicans are having trouble with their wayward daughter, Sharon, whilst at the village store, the Charter-Placketts are trying to bring a touch of Harrods to the neighbourhood. And then there is the beautiful, tragic Suzy Meadows. With the prospect of bringing up three children alone after the suicide of her husband, she turns to Peter for support - and the new rector finds himself facing a difficult decision. Then the whole village is rocked by a spiteful trick that goes terribly wrong, and a gruesome murder that points to a killer in its midst. Now, more than ever, Peter's pastoral role is crucial - and yet he is wrestling with his own private hell that may still wreck his life.

Talk of the Village

The village is bedevilled by talk and all is not as it seems in the village of Turnham Malpas ... Does pushy newcomer Venetia have her eye on Peter, the handsome rector? Is Jeremy, her husband, really making a success of the new health club? And why does Willie's new love set a vicious tongue wagging? In the Royal Oak, the usual banter has turned to bitter wrangling as the rector's wife Caroline makes a challenge over an ancient country tradition and splits the village her husband had so recently united. As the people of the village use the power of words to reconcile or divide, Peter finds it is what isn't talked about that threatens to cause madness, confusion and tragedy.

Village Matters

Times are changing in Turnham Malpas ... Brash Craddock Fitch up at the Big House seems determined to make his mark on the village - and the village is determined to put him in his place. Sir Ralph is having trouble adjusting to his more modest status and timid Muriel to her exalted one while a change of fortune surprises Jimmy Glover too. It's all Jimbo Charter-Plackett, fount of all gossip, can do to keep up. But these concerns are eclipsed by tragedy when Flick, Jimbo's daughter, is knocked down by the unpopular barman Alan. And before the shock of the accident has passed, a bitter dispute springs up that could affect the entire village ...

Village Gossip

For the locals of Turnham Malpas the rural peace is disrupted when a famous actor comes to stay to recuperate from illness. Before long he is bored by village life and when he meets Caroline, the rector's wife, he is instantly attracted to her. He agrees to direct and star in a play with the villagers as his supporting cast and Caroline as his leading lady... Before long, the villagers' lives are turned upside down: a marriage is wrecked, a proud man humbled and two people are brought closer together as gossip, scandal and jealousy mount...

 Village Wives

There's trouble afoot in Barleybridge. The vets' Practice, which normally runs so smoothly, is disrupted by the new locum, Dan, who seems to be annoying just about everyone with his abrupt manner and unreasonable demands. And when he succeeds in losing an important client through his arrogant attitude, the wives connected to the Practice are determined that something has to be done. But Kate, who works at the Practice, finds she rather likes Dan's no-nonsense approach, despite what everyone thinks about him. Then, when she is suddenly confronted by a devastating tragedy at home, it is Dan, with a sad secret of his own, who helps her come to terms with her new situation...

A Village Dilemma

A Turnham Malpas Novel: 9 The inhabitants of Turnham Malpas are happily celebrating Stocks Day on the village green when the unwelcome reappearance of Bryn Fields, after several years' absence, causes surprise and dismay. It is difficult to believe that he dares to show his face in the village after running off with the barmaid and leaving his wife Georgie to run The Royal Oak alone. But Bryn has a reason for coming back, one which some of the villagers welcome: he plans to use the village as a key attraction for visiting Americans and is keen for it to remain just the way it has always been. It is inevitable that this causes very real dilemmas for the villagers. But for the rector and his wife there is a dilemma of a more serious and personal nature. Peter and Caroline's twins start asking who their real mother is. Unable to have children of her own, Caroline accepted the result of Peter's indiscretion; facing up to it now after more than ten years is almost more than she can bear.

Trouble in the Village

When the people of Turnham Malpas realise that all is not as it should be between Peter, the rector, and his wife Caroline, the smooth running of the village falters. Then the appointment of a new verger causes trouble when events from his past return to haunt him, bringing violence and danger to the peace of the village. And there are the strange goings-on in the church at night, one of the villagers' houses is ransacked; a couple is beaten up... But troubles in Turnham Malpas are put to rest as Bonfire Night at the Big House arrives and the celebrations unite the village once again.
