Red SKELTON, American comic. Superb HAND SIGNED WWII Autograph Card. In FINE condition. GUARANTEED GENUINE.

Signed in typical fashion 'I dood it Red Skelton.' Fine condition & signature, paste marks on back of card. 'I dood it' was the title of a Skelton film in 1943.

This superb Red Skelton autograph is on a card of the US Naval Aid Auxiliary. A war-time organization, the NAA set up a series of canteens across the country to provide entertainment and temporary housing for servicemen and sailors transferring from one location to another. The NAA had access to the many stars who performed in the canteens and came up with the idea of selling their autographs as a fund raiser. In 1944 the NAA had signed up almost 200 celebrities, Skelton amongst the, who were willing to autograph specially prepared cards the NAA provided. The autographs were on a red, white, and blue cards with the pre-printed logo of the NAA.

Richard Bernard "Red" Skelton (1913 – 1997) was an American entertainer best known in the US for his national radio and television shows between 1937 and 1971. Skelton learned his trade in traveling medicine shows, on a showboat, on the burlesque circuit and then entered vaudeville in 1934. His radio career began in 1937. He starred on The Raleigh Cigarettes Program in 1941 where many of his comedy characters were created and had a regularly scheduled radio program until 1957. The Red Skelton Show made its television premiere in 1951 and he starred in a regularly scheduled television show until 1971. Skelton appeared in more than 40 films over the course of his career and it is through these that he is best known around the world.

Skelton's artwork of clowns remained a hobby until 1964, when his wife, Georgia, convinced him to show his work in Las Vegas while he was performing there. Sales of his originals were successful and Skelton also sold prints and lithographs, earning $2.5 million yearly on lithograph sales. At the time of his death, his art dealer believed Skelton had earned more money through his paintings than from his television work.
