River Scene near Hong Kong

Original Watercolour Painting c.1932

Attributed to E. Kato

A very fine watercolour painting attributed to E. Kato depicting a river scene near Hong Kong.  The whole scene is somewhat overcast, the sky is misty and pale and the trees in the background are shrouded in mist.  The painting is a superb example of Kato's work and remains in very fine condition.  A first class work by an artist of the highest calibre this painting would grace any home or collection.  The painting is presented in a giltwood frame and is not glazed.  The painting was one of four paintings by Kato that we have previously had available for sale; one was lined with a copy of the South China Morning Post, printed in Hong Kong on 20th April 1932, presumably this one was painted at around the same time. The painting is signed lower right.

A larger painting than our offering, a daytime view of the harbour looking North was sold by Christie's Hong Kong in 1993 for 218,500 HKD (28,267 US$).

Original watercolours by Kato are worth thousands, often tens of thousands of pounds.  Snapshots of results for similar paintings are included in the photograph section below.

This superb work measures :

Painting:              25.5cm (10") x 33cm (13")

Frame:                42cm (16.5") x 53cm (21")

Please phone 0870 86 35 808 to pay by credit card, if you have any questions please either ask a question through Ebay or call us.  This number is charged at the National Rate.

Art as an Investment

In these uncertain financial times tangible assets such as gold and art are being recommended as a safer alternative to stocks and shares by many leading experts.

“Companies go bust, artists don’t,” said David Douglas an Irish art expert of the recent economic turmoil.

Damien Hirst's phenomenally successful sale at Sotheby's recently illustrates that high end art is able to prosper in an economic downturn.  Less well publicised are the examples of the many thousands of lesser known artists whose work continues to increase in price when offered at auction.

Cataloguing Terms

(i) where the bold coloured text which forms the listing’s heading reads ‘by’ and is followed by the artist's full name (or the artist's initials, if his full name is unrecorded), the work is in our opinion by the artist;

(ii) where the expression "attributed to" is used, the work is in our opinion possibly a work by the artist, in whole or in part;

(iii) where the expression 'circle of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence;

(iv) where the expression 'follower of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work exucuted in the artist's style but not necessarily by a pupil;

(v) where the expression 'manner of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date;

(vi) where the term "after" is used, the work is in our opinion a copy or pastiche (of any date) of a work by the artist.

Where the term 'signed...' is used in our opinion the work has been signed by the artist, where the term 'with signature...' or 'bears signature...' is used in our opinion the signature is by a hand other than that of the artist.

Posting, Packing and Liability for Damaged Frames - Every painting we sell is packaged in bubble wrap and encased in a custom made hardboard box to ensure their safety whilst in transit.  The vast majority of our paintings are sent by insured overnight courier services, either APC for the UK mainland or FedEx for most of the rest of the World.  Our insurance policy no longer covers damage to frames and we are therefore only able to send frames at the buyer's risk.

For a detailed explination of our cataloguing terms as well as our full conditions of sale please see our 'About Me' page.

We expect payment to be sent within 48 hours of the end of the sale unless we have previously agreed otherwise.
