Russian Imperial 1709 Medal to Captain Simontov from Peter I
In 1709 on the personal order of Peter I was made a nominal award a gold medal for Matthew Simont (Simontova), an Italian sea captain in the Russian service. M.Simontov came to Russia in 1698 with a commitment to teach 10 people Russian "military shipboard marine go." But it so happened that on the personal orders of Peter Simontov was sent to lead the construction of the harbor at the mouth of the river first Mius, and then (when it was revealed the inability of its construction it was there) based on the drawings began Simontova equipment harbor elsewhere in Taganrog. When in May 1709 in Taganrog came Peter, building a harbor here was already largely completed. Apparently satisfied with what he saw, Peter immediately ordered M.Simontova reward. In a letter to Admiral FM Apraksina Peter I, sent June 2, 1709 in Moscow, says: "Coin Matthew Simontovu Person of Your Majesty, and on the other side with the mark of the harbor and the signing of the decree immediately command the doing, and when will immediately send to Your Majesty" .
