This book by Claire Tomalin is a great way to start experiencing the life and times of this great man. Samuel Pepys lived at a time when England was going through vast changes. Civil war, religious persecution, plague & the fire of London, all experienced by him. Claire guides you through what is written in his diaries-but please do not expect to be reading exactly what Pepys has to say. This book only gives you an idea of his project, but it is a fantastic read, listing the major people that he knew, his family and his thoughts on them, and passing remarks on the be-heading of Charles I, Cromwell, The Great Fire, numerous Lords, Ladies, Mps as well as the massive upheavals this country was going through. 'The Unequalled Self' is a starter-book. Once you have read this, you will be fully prepared to go on and purchase the diaries. Ms Tomalin gave me the foundations & expectations, preparation & readiness to go on and venture into Pepys world. To me, this publication is like a revision to an exam. You will be-able to read 'The Diaries' & feel that you know what is coming up, but then be delighted to be told (in his own words) precisely what went through his mind. It gives you the confidence & knowledge, will take away a lot of the 'I don't understand this' that you would probably get if you just went ahead first & bought Pepys volumes. The only dislike I had of this book, is that I was expecting a concise version of the diaries, Samuels written thoughts on life. It doesn't provide that, if that is what you want. Like I say though, this book will give you a better understanding to the real thing. Having said that, this book didn't have a review, so I hope what I've listed, will be of some help.Read full review
An absolutely excellent read, thoroughly absorbing and a fascinating Journey through Pepys’s life which in itself is chock-full of historic events in British history from the beheading of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell‘s rise to the ultimate position of power, the crowning of Charles II, not to mention the great fire of London and of course several episodes of the great plague. I Really couldn’t put it down - especially during this particularly difficult time during this current Global pandemic!
