SCOTTISH THISTLE THEMED ITEMS
I am offering here a perfect solution to that unreachable itch: an elegant and practical back scratcher! For me this is a winning and fun item to make: I get to USE IT (It works phenomenally well!) AND I get to MAKE IT ('making' is what I do) AND I get to OFFER IT FOR SALE (if it sells, I get to stay on the planet!) That's WIN-WIN-WIN in my book... I hope you like it too!
The spalted Persimmon is a kind of rarity and, as with most of my wood items, the PERSIMMON is finished with oil (heated) immersion (same as my spurtles) for a protective, non-gloss, velvety feel. After some experimentation over the last several months I decided to keep these in the heated dip tank for only one hour. This wood is very compatible to the oil finish but being so 'dense' it only needed that amount of immersion time; even if left in the oil for longer periods of time it would not 'absorb' more, so this is one of those cases where less is more. . .or at least enough.
The 'SCRATCHER' end is made from cast, ground and highly polished aluminum, EPOXIED into the handle. The joining of the metal part to the wood part, because the wood has to be bored to accept the backscratcher socket, has been married with epoxy...to make the joint as strong (if not stronger) than any part of the backscratcher.
The PERSIMMON handle is made in the traditional Scottish Thistle design with 18 flutes. I've also embellished the upper half of the shaft with left and right spiral flutes, forming a diamond design; more decorative than utilitarian but it also makes for a good grip.
I've added a 'camera quality' wrist lanyard to each piece, great for hanging on a wall hook.
Please view the photos, review all of the information above, and please ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE, before purchasing . . . I'll answer promptly!
PLEASE NOTE: All of the backscratchers offered here are from a lot of wood that is SPALTED. The wood has absorbed minerals from the ground during it's growth, and therefore the parts I've made from this wood are all different and individual in appearance. All of these backscratcher have spalting . . . some more than others. In my biz these colorations/discolorations are considered desirable, making each piece unique. The last six photos show some of the variations. While I'm not listing these parts individually, if you would prefer more 'spalting character' in your purchase, please let me know by sending a 'note to seller' during checkout. According to your wishes I'll send you the next part in line that suits your preference.
This small lot of PERSIMMON WOOD has been used up making the backscratchers (and matching 'slipper spoon', shoe horn mentioned below); I very much doubt I'll ever come across such an interesting and attractive, nature decorated wood like this again. The number shown in the listing is what there is. . .when they're gone there won't be anymore.
ALSO, NEW 23" SHOEHORNS, MADE WITH SPALTED PERSIMMON WOOD, ARE ALSO NOW AVAILABLE! INDIVIDUALLY OR AS A 'SET' (buy one of each. . . they are in separate listings) THESE WILL MAKE GREAT GIFTS OF HEIRLOOM QUALITY! CLICK ON: Check out my other items!
INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: PLEASE NOTE!
ABOUT SHIPPING PRICES: International shipping costs have gone higher than ever and the shipping (cost) calculator is, in my experience, invariably wrong, always higher than actual cost. . . usually by a LOT! I know some sellers rely on that overcharge to boost their profit margin BUT I ONLY CHARGE ACTUAL COST OF SHIPPING and I ALWAYS refund any overcharge as soon as I ship your item (within 1 business day). So, if the 'calculated' shipping quote is high, be assured that any overage will be returned to your account right away. I value my international customers very highly and I'll always save you $ when I can. Thank you for being aware!
By the way, I'm a woodturner by vocation, making almost any and all kinds of turned wood objects on my lathes. I've made things as small as push-pins and as large as columns (26 feet tall for a government building in California). I'm often responsible for designing and crafting architectural turned parts such as stair balusters and newel posts, furniture parts such as legs, pedestals, stretchers, lamps and lighting fixtures, spindles of all sorts, simply turned or embellished with flutes, spirals or other ornamentation. My wood turning ranges from the mundane (such as tool handles) to the artistic; seven of my 'lathe art' works are in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and other institutions as well as many private collections.
Because I thoroughly enjoy what I do, I'm constantly looking for new turning opportunities...the spurtles, honey dippers and hiking sticks I offer in my eBay store are perfect examples; I'm creating something fun, decorative and useful for people to enjoy, making a little green to stay on the planet, and having a whole lot of fun in the process. My ongoing Thanks to all of you!
I guarantee that you won't be disappointed. . . that's why I have a 30 day return policy, and I will honor it cheerfully if you are not completely satisfied with the transaction.
