Paul’s tips for buying a used clarinet on eBay....
All clarinets look pretty much the same, and it’s impossible to tell from a photo (especially a blurry one!) whether it is going to be any good. Clarinets, like most instruments, are precision engineered, with lots of moving parts, and can be damaged quite easily through careless handling. They also need a certain amount of looking after, and it is very important to dry them properly after playing, to prolong the life of the pads (the little round white/yellow bits that cover the holes). It is also easy to bend the keywork when assembling or taking it apart – resulting in a trip to a repair shop.
So, read the seller’s description VERY carefully and be wary of phrases like:
“I don’t know anything about instruments”, “It looks OK and all the parts seem to move properly”, “It’s been in the loft for a few years but was playing perfectly”, “May need a service” etc.
Also of course, check the seller’s feedback, and whether they are happy to accept returns (and pay the postage costs) if you’re not 100% happy with the instrument.
If it does need some work, then sadly it’s not going to be cheap. A ‘Check and General adjustment’ to a clarinet is around £60, a ‘Service’ involving stripping down and replacing a couple of pads is around £100 whilst a ‘Full repad’ (often needed if a clarinet’s been stored slightly damp) will be around £170. So that bargain clarinet for £60 may turn out to be dearer than you anticipated!
All my instruments are fully checked, with any necessary repairs/adjustments carried out professionally BEFORE I list them.
I am happy to accept returns within 14 days if you simply change your mind. Plus, if you do experience any problems - even the most carefully handled instrument can occasionally need repairs or adjustments, I’ll do my very best to get it sorted out or will refund you – and will even pay your return postage!

SONATA / HANSON Bb CLARINET
In Excellent Condition with Very Little Use
Through an arrangement with a very large instrument retailer, I specialise in selling ex display and ex lease instruments and accessories, surplus stock as well as items which have been returned by customers who have changed their minds. These represent excellent value for money, and can save you £££s off the normal price.
- I buy these clarinets direct from the original supplier. They are just a few months old, and are in excellent condition, having been returned from schools due to lack of use .
- I used to photograph and list them individually, but since they all look exactly the same, I am trying a different approach, which is less time consuming for me, and allows me to offer them to you at even more attractive prices!
- The photographs give you a pretty good idea of the general excellent condition of these instruments.
- EVERY instrument has been checked (and will be play tested again before dispatch) and all corks, joints, pads are in excellent condition. The mouthpieces are fitted with a rubber cushion to protect them.
- The cases too are in excellent condition, and have two handles (one on the top, one on the side), as well as two removable straps so they can be carried over the shoulder.
