THE STORY OF RORY
Story and illustrations by Penny Miller. Published by Books of Africa (PTY.) Ltd., Cape Town, South Africa. No date is present, but I have found from the National Catalogue Record (South Africa) that the book was published in 1963.
Rory is a mischievous lion who, after finding himself the last lion left in this area, begins to terrorize the inhabitants of old Cape Town. He does this more out of playfulness and boredom, than anger. Rory is finally captured and is to be “shot or banished.” Rory saves Cape Town from an attack by wild men and becomes a hero. The book is illustrated on every page, mostly in color. Some of the illustrations depict non-whites in a racist or stereotypical way, although, to be fair, most of the whites look ridiculous as well.
I have been informed by a bookseller--Clarke's Africana and Rare Books, Constantia (Cape Town)--that this title is very hard to find. A determined search online brought up no copies at all.
Penny Miller, a South African artist and writer, is best known for her book Myths And Legends Of Southern Africa, published in 1979. It is perhaps one of the best books ever written on the subject.
10 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches--28 pages
This hardcover book is in good condition. There is no dustjacket. The illustrated boards are worn at the corners and edges. There is some dirt and soil on the boards. The front joint has split open. The interior is clean with no names, marks, tears or odor. A small bookseller’s label (Stuttafords Book Shop Cape Town) is on the bottom of the front pastedown. The first few pages are starting to separate at the bottom (about 2 inches up or so) from the binding, but are still well attached. The paper is a little toned or yellowed, but not brittle.
