MAVERICK HISTORY LESSON:
Since it's formation in 1997, Maverick rapidly developed a reputation for producing high quality guitars without the inflated prices so often associated with household names such as Gibson and Fender.
SADLY MAVERICKS ARE NOW OUT OF PRODUCTION
Unusually for the guitar industry, Maverick was an English company, and although all the guitars were hand-made in Korea, the designs were produced in England. In a relatively short time, Maverick developed a reputation for superb build-quality, innovative design features and the use of high-output humbuckers producing immense sounds. Whilst being the new kid on the block, Maverick showed that they really meant business when it came to the manufacture of quality electric guitars.
By 1999 Maverick had produced their first prototype model, which was followed shortly afterwards by their debut production model, the Maverick F-1. This was followed in quick succession by its stablemate, the Maverick X-1.
Neck: One Piece Carved Canadian Maple Scale: 25in Fingerboard: AAA Grade Indian Rosewood Frets: 24 Bridge: Maverick LP-1 Floyd Rose Switching: 3 way toggle Pickups: Two Maverick A-type Alnico V humbuckers Hardware: Polished Nickel Plate
The F1 is often described as being a 'Superstrat'. Essentially what this means is that it's body shape bears a passing resemblance to the classic Fender Stratocaster, but as with many of the superstrats the design has been modified and in many cases improved to the point where the resemblance is only passing.
The body in this case is made of Alder, beautifully contoured for comfort, balance and ease of accessibility to the highest frets. Whilst careful attention has gone into the rib contour on the reverse side, and the deep carved top contour to allow maximum comfort for the player, looks haven't been sacrificed. Unlike its demonic looking sibling the Maverick X-1, the F1 is a truly beautiful looking guitar.
Along with the other high-end Maverick guitars, the F1 also features the patented Evolution roller system that constitutes the volume and tone controls. Gone are the traditional knobs sat on the body of the guitar, instead they have been turned on their side and recessed into the bottom edge of the guitar body. Apart from the fact they look incredibly stylish, the main reason for this innovation is that they are not as easy to knock when the guitar is played on stage. Add to that the recessed pickup switch and jack socket, the rubber O-rings on the pickup switch and tremolo arm, and you have a guitar that is not just eye-catching but incredibly practical.
In common with other Mavericks is the elegantly pointed headstock, which adds a real touch of class.
Here we also find the high-quality Maverick branded machineheads, and the Subtle but stylish Maverick logo.
Moving down we get to the neck, carved and then hand-finished from a single piece of kiln-dried Canadian maple.
It really is that sort of attention to detail that sets these guitars apart from the competition. The neck joint and heel are carefully sculpted, with the fixing bolts also recessed to provide maximum access to even the highest notes on the fretboard. Maverick necks have a strong reputation for being shallow and fast and this one is like quicksilver. The AAA grade Indian Rosewood fretboard has 24 frets giving you a full 2 octave range for those screaming solos. Add to that a Floyd Rose style bridge and locking neck and you can scream and dive-bomb till your hearts content, safe in the knowledge your tuning will be the same as when you started. All of this tends to suggest a guitar designed for metal heads, shredders, widdlers and whatever else the speed merchants like to call themselves, but in reality the F1 can do a lot more.
Now we come to the reason tyhat we have had several Mavericks, ...the pickups. No matter which model we've had, irrespective of the type of pickups installed, I never fail to be impressed by the quality. I recently bought some Maverick pickups from eBay and installed them in my Ibanez to replace the slightly weak stock pickups it came with. The increase in power and versatility of tone has made such an amazing difference to the guitar that you wouldn't believe it was the same model.
Some of the early models featured pickups designed by Seymour Duncan, one of the truly great pickup manufacturers. These were soon replaced by Mavericks own A-type Alnico V pickups as soon as the design was ready. These things are deep, warm, full of tone and immensely powerful. These pickups are extremely versatile, allowing a wide range of rock styles when using distorted amplifier settings, together with surprisingly mellow tones on clean amplifier settings.
