STUNNING ORIGINAL &  RARE

ART DECO FELIX THE CAT ENAMEL SOLID SILVER BOOKMARK

Adie & Lovekin Birmingham 1924

This is a stunning Original & Rare Art Deco Felix the Cat Enamel Solid Silver Bookmark crafted by the highly sought after Victorian silversmiths Adie & Lovekin , this Rare bookmark was Assayed in Birmingham in 1924 at the height of Felix the Cats popularity making it 90 years old, the design and decoration is so very beautiful with an adorable Felix the Cat in black Enamel standing above the solid silver bookmark, this is not a modern copy but an original and extremely rare, you wont find another like this on the market today. The quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this shows the normal signs of wear with little chipping to felix's feet and just a little surface scratches as you would expect, that being said it doesnt detract at all from its rare beauty, this just adds to its history, just mentioned for accuracy. This is fully hallmarked to the body. This will add something very special to any collection, my photos dont do it justice,

FELIX the CAT

Felix the Cat is a funny animal cartoon character created in the silent film era. The anthropomorphic black cat with his black body and giant grin, coupled with the surrealism of the situations in which his cartoons place him, combine to make Felix one of the most recognized cartoon characters in film history. Felix was the first character from animation to attain a level of popularity sufficient to draw movie audiences

Felix's origins remain disputed. Australian cartoonist/film entrepreneur Pat Sullivan, owner of the Felix character, claimed during his lifetime to be its creator. American animator Otto Messmer, Sullivan's lead animator, has been credited as such.[3] What is certain is that Felix emerged from Sullivan's studio, and cartoons featuring the character enjoyed success and popularity in 1920s popular culture. Aside from the animated shorts, Felix starred in a comic strip (drawn by Sullivan, Messmer and later Joe Oriolo) beginning in 1923,[4] and his image soon adorned merchandise such as ceramics, toys and postcards. Several manufacturers made stuffed Felix toys. Jazz bands such as Paul Whiteman's played songs about him (1923's "Felix Kept On Walking" and others).

FELIX THE CAT had a very humble beginning as a curious, mischievous and inventive little character as first conceived by New Jersey cartoonist Otto Messmer. He was more popular than the live silent movie stars and world leaders of the same era. His squat, angular, black body and huge, wide eyes and grin were instantly recognizable. He is considered the first true animated movie star. His first appearance was in a short film called Feline Follies. Soon thereafter he made the transition from screen to print

Felix’s popularity never stops growing! Could it be because he’s a nostalgic figure? Or that he represents Americana? Or that he continues to win over new audiences with his winning personality, humor and visual appeal?
