Salyut (USSR) - ZENITH 80 Large format CAMERA + lens complete with case

(Based on Hasselblad 1600) - PRE-OWNED*

Manufactured in the USSR between 1957 - 1973, the "Salyut" range of cameras was the first attempt by the Soviet camera industry to produce a sophisticated medium format camera. It was probably a near copy of the Hasselblad 1600.

The Soviets claimed that both the Hasselblad and the Salyut were derived from a Nazi prototype, however none of these supposed forerunners have ever been seen so this origin is dubious.

These cameras were very expensive at 400 Rubles, which represented six months salary to the average Soviet citizen. The Mir-3 cost 240 Rubles. This means that production was very limited and these cameras and lenses are rare.

Production started in 1957 or 1958 and ended in 1973 with three variations. Variation one has a top speed of 1500 and a self-timer. Variation two has a top speed of 1500 and no self-timer. Variation three has a top speed of 1000.

The camera for auction here is the less common Variation three export version of the Salyut camera, under the name "Zenith-80" (Zenit 80). It has a slightly modified lens mount and is fitted with a "VITOFLEX" 2.8/80mm lens #6803057 and has "Made in USSR" markings on the side-plate.

ESSENTIAL READING PRIOR TO BIDDING - for detailed technical data and full description of this camera and it's features you should visit http://www.butkus.org/chinon/russian/zenith_80/zenith_80.htm

*DISCLAIMER: Whilst this camera appears on the surface to be in very good, clean condition and everything moves and works the way I assume it should, I have no way of testing it fully and therefore cannot guarantee whether or not it is completely functional. I have provided as many images as I can for you to make up your own mind as to its condition.
With this in mind and to be fair to all concerned, this auction is strictly ‘SOLD AS SEEN’, the item being sold in ‘AS-IS’ condition.

YOUR GUARANTEE: For re-assurance that you are dealing with a reputable eBay seller, please note that I have been a member of eBay for over 12 years during which time I have maintained a 100% positive feedback and achieved eBay TRS status. Please View My Feedback to see what other buyers have to say about their dealings with me. As an eBay TR seller I do my best to maintain my 100% excellent customer service, so in the unlikely event that you have a problem (and before leaving feedback or DSR Ratings) please contact me straightaway, you can guarantee a swift response and 100% comittment to resolving the issue quickly.

GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS OF MY AUCTIONS AND BUY IT NOW SALES

DESCRIPTION OF ITEMS
I make every effort to be as accurate as possible in both dating and the description of the item upon the information to hand at the time. If I am unsure as to the exact date I will always refer to the date as 'circa' or c.1800 for example. It is assumed that bidders will be sufficiently knowledgeable about their specialist field to appreciate the authenticity of an item, its origin, date and potential value when bidding and as such feel I cannot accept responsibility for possible discrepancies in dating or any other information that may arise after the auction is completed unless it is clearly my mistake.
PAYMENT METHODS
PayPal is my preferred method of payment and will generally ensure despatch of your goods within 24 hours once payment is received. (Please allow extra time at weekends or bank holidays). I do of course accept cheques, postal orders or bank drafts or payment in full on collection where appropriate, although 'BUY IT NOW' transactions are generally immediate payment required unless where specified in checkout.
IMAGES & PHOTOGRAPHS
To assist bidders, I prefer to host images outside of eBay in order to provide a larger and much more detailed illustration. Hopefully they accurately reflect the quality and detail of each item and leave little doubt as to the condition of the item. Although all the images are optimised please accept my apologies if they do take a little longer to download but I'm sure you'll agree they are worth it. You can supersize any image (generally to 1000 pixels wide) by clicking on each image or the link below it, this will open a separate window and will not take you away from the item listing. Should you require further photographs to be taken I will happily provide this facility to genuine potential bidders, just
email me with your requirements.
PACKAGING & SHIPPING COSTS
Your item will be suitably well protected and sent in appropriate (often recycled) packaging materials which are INCLUDED AT COST where applicable. I DO NOT profit from postage and packing, in fact quite the contrary I only add a very small handling charge as per eBay's own guidelines. As a regular buyer too, I take exception to the way some sellers on eBay seek to profit from shipping costs so I try to keep my p&p charges to an absolute minimum.
I regularly part-refund postage costs where I have over-estimated in the listing
View My Feedback
. I DO NOT add extra charges to cover eBay or PayPal fees for the same reason, so please remember this when leaving feedback and DSR ratings.
POSTAL DISCOUNTS
I ALWAYS offer combined postage discounts if you have bought more than one item so please wait for me to send a combined postage invoice before making payment. If in doubt please email me.
PROOF OF POSTING
I ALWAYS obtain Proof of Posting to ensure all items are automatically insured up to a value of £46 when sent by Royal Mail. I hold no responsibility for loss or damage in the post and make this statement simply to protect myself.
FEEDBACK
I do not wait to see what comments you've posted about me before I leave feedback. I ALWAYS leave feedback FIRST - as soon as I receive your payment - as that's how I think it should be. Once you have received the item you've won and are happy with both it and the service I’ve provided, I'd appreciate feedback from you too as and when you have time, it also lets me know that you've received the item safely. I believe that feedback is important to everyone's standing within the eBay community.
RETURNS & REFUNDS
If you have purchased an item and are unhappy with your purchase for any reason - or if you feel I have misrepresented it in any way - do please
email
me straight away before leaving feedback. I'm sure we’ll be able to reach an amicable solution. In TWELVE YEARS as an eBay member I have never experienced a major problem with over 2000 transactions - I like to think that my 100% feedback and eBay TRS status speaks for itself. In the case of particular listings where I do not accept returns such as a 'SOLD AS SEEN' auction then this will be clearly indicated in the description.
CONTACT ME
If you have any questions at all please feel free to
email
me. Although all emails are now synchronised with my mobile 'phone, I don't live in cyberspace and cannot guarantee an immediate response, but will endeavour to answer your query as soon as I possibly can. I cannot guarantee that I will be able to add any further information to that already given in the listing, but I will try.
THANK YOU & GOOD LUCK
Thank you for taking the time and trouble to look at my auction, should you feel the urge to bid or purchase, then good luck. Add me to your Favourite Sellers

On 07-Jul-12 at 09:27:42 BST, seller added the following information:

Since this camera was listed I have received a couple of emails from eBay members concerned about the accuracy of the information in the listing. I have shown their comments in full below, together with my responses. For the avoidance of doubt I felt it only correct that these concerns be highlighted as I don't want to give potential bidders and the eventual new owner of this camera that I tried to mislead anyone after the auctions ends. Frankly I am totally confused by the entire scenario and as I always state in my Terms & Conditions (see listing) - "DESCRIPTION OF ITEMS I make every effort to be as accurate as possible in both dating and the description of the item upon the information to hand at the time. If I am unsure as to the exact date I will always refer to the date as 'circa' or c.1800 for example. It is assumed that bidders will be sufficiently knowledgeable about their specialist field to appreciate the authenticity of an item, its origin, date and potential value when bidding and as such feel I cannot accept responsibility for possible discrepancies in dating or any other information that may arise after the auction is completed unless it is clearly my mistake." 1. FROM AN EBAY MEMBER Its a medium format camera, 120 film. (I told you this because Im a seller too and you will earn more money) because only few people use large format cameras. MY RESPONSE. Thank you for your message however my sopurce of information is http://www.butkus.org/chinon/russian/zenith_80/zenith_80.htmI am now confused!! RESPONSE FROM SAME EBAY MEMBER This kind of cameras have different parts: The body (where the speed is), the lenses (aperture) and the back, where you put the film. This camera Uses 120 roll films that its MEDIUM FORMAT (135 or usually called 35mm its normal films that old cameras use). I have a Large format camera and they use 4x5 or bigger (its like a paper or film instead a roll).Trust me, Im selling the same camera kit!If you put medium format camera in Ebay you will find a lot of bronica, some Zenith and expensive Hasselblad.I know that the web says large format, but maybe its a bad translation or only for selling it. 2. FROM ANOTHER EBAY MEMBER Greetings, Thank you for the general information about the Salyut cameras but more information about this specific specimen is needed. ---You post that a Vitoflex 80 mm f/2.8 lens from 1968 is attached but the picture shows a more common Industar-29 lens from 1973?????? ---Straight on photo of red wind knob so customer can read text??????? ---Straight on photo of rear of camera so customer can read serial number and see condition of shutter curtain. ---Most important of all does shutter wind properly and fire properly. For this test you do not need film. Remove the back and test the shutter wind and release at maybe one or two speeds. With back removed you are testing the shutter and the back is not impeding the test should the back itself be faulty. MY RESPONSE. Hello Thank you for your message. I wish to make it clear, as stated right at the top of the listing, I do not own this item, I sell items on eBay on behalf of other people and am only guided by the information given to me by the client at the time they bring the item into my shop. Equally I was also influenced by the information in the website link shown in the listing which also indicates that the lens supplied with the camera is a Vitolflex so apologies if it is not the one as indicated in the listing text. As there are already bids on the item I cannot now change the item text but will post this reply to the listing by way of an erratum. I am not an expert in this field, clearly you are, and once I can obtain access to the camera once more in the next few days I will forward the images you request, I will also undertake the test you suggest, but I would respectfully refer you to the disclaimer regarding its functionality andf the fact that this is a strictly 'SOLD AS SEEN' auction. If you are seeking a fully opoerational, pristine example then maybe this one isn't for you. Nevertheless please send me your email address so that I can forward the images you require when I am able to take them. I hope this helps anyone who is intending to bid or current bidders. Please email if anyone has any further concerns
