Previously I had a Sky + HD box the picture quality from the Samsung SMT-S7800 is far superior especially in HD. I would recommend this product if you are thinking of ending you’re Sky subscription as the recording facility on the Samsung works great without having to pay £10 per month if you leave Sky for the use of the Sky + HD box. This machine does what my wife & I want it to do but doesn't get a 5 star rating for 2 reasons. The biggest is that it is not a user friendly machine, lots of hidden menus, strange buttons to press to do a job etc. not helped by a poor manual; the best example is that it tells you you can do series link when setting a program to record, but not how! Took 3 goes to work that one out.... The minor issue is that I agree with other reviews about a LONG BOOT UP TIME, real pain when you've just remembered about something you want to watch now. However, excellent price for a very large drive and , being Samsung, should be reliable.
Brilliant piece of kit. Initially I bought this box as I was totally fed up of the ever increasing monthly subscription fees for SKY, and Freesat seemed to be the only viable option for me (Freeview reception in my area is not good). I spent a lot of time reading reviews of various Freesat boxes and in the end decided it was really going to be between Humax and Samsung. Both seem to have equally impressive reviews and their top range boxes come with all the bells and whistles you need. The reason I decided for Samsung was down to the lower price of the box for the same range of options. I've now used the box for about a month and I'm very impressed by it. First thing I noticed was the big increase in picture sharpness/quality. My old SKY box wasn't HD yet, but even the standard channels on the Samsung look 10 times better than they ever did on SKY. Setting up the box was also a doddle. Between opening the box and watching the first programme took about 10 minutes. Apart from the already mentioned picture quality, the rest of the features are also very impressive. The TV guide works really well and intuitive. I also like the options of Youtube, BBC and ITV I-players (if you plug it into your network). There are also some things which could be improved: - Somehow the box is not capable of viewing most of my shared files across my home network (pictures etc). I've not sussed out yet what this is but got a feeling it's not something that can be fixed. - An option to hook up to netflix/lovefilm etc would be good (but is currently not available). - Remote control responds a bit slow sometimes and is not really of the same quality as the SKY one. Even with those niggles I'll easily give this box 5 out of 5. Superb product, great quality and best of all: no more SKY fees!Read full review
On the whole very good piece of kit. However the one major flaw is lack of manual timer. This is important because it uses automatic station prompts to start and finish. If these are wrong which around 10 percent are you miss that part of the recording. Another make allowed additional time to be added.

Bought this as a stopgap replacement for a second failed Humax (who are no longer making Freesat equipment). Have to say I'm pleasantly surprised wirh the build quality and operation of this box. Even though the software isn't the most modern, it does everything it should, and does it well.
