I admit it. I'm a Nikon nut. I am inclined to believe that everything Nikon does is worlds better than anyone else. In the case of the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8, I can't find one compelling reason to choose Nikon over the Sigma. Sure, there's a bit more range (17-55 instead of 18-50), but the Nikon is $1,000 more than the Sigma. As far as optical performance, they are almost perfectly comparable. Sigma flares a bit more than the Nikon at ultra-wide angles, but if you use the included hood that shouldn't be a problem. There is no visible distortion at any focal length, and vignetting is only visible at around 18-24mm range. The glass is sharp as a tack, and perhaps most importantly, the lens is solid. It feels like you could take it into battle. I own an arsenal of Nikon lenses, but since I bought this lens 7 months ago, it's the only one I carry anymore. If you shoot landscapes, portraits, or indoor snapshots, this lens is a must-have. Save the $1,000 and buy the Sigma.Read full review
I tried this lens on my Canon 7D; it focuses very sharp in manual focus. But when I tried it with auto focusing, it was not that sharp, it was almost there but not quiet there. If you are okay with manual focusing all the time I guess this is a great lens. My experience with Sigma lens is kind of mixed.I love my Sigma 10-20 and 170 -500, but had to return two of the 2.8/f lenses.
Great lens, unless you can spend $1,400 on a canon or nikon. This is my second one only because I work as a photojournalist and wear out equipment every four or five years and the first one i had was used when i got it. Sure if I could afford a name brand I would but this is the best alternative.
I bought it used one last month and having no issue so far. it is cheaper then new one if it handled with care and professionally. disadvantage is that you will not get warranty even if it is less then one year old. you are not the first buyer so sigma will ask for purchase receipt while sending back to them.
beautiful lens, quick and easy to operate. excellent ability to take low light level pictures. it is now my number one lens.
