Therapeutic and metaphysical Properties of Copper
Copper, as a natural elemental metal, has been mined for thousands of years to make tools, jewellery and other decorative items. It is associated with mystic lore and legend because of its natural healing qualities. It is said that Copper holds the powers of Mother Nature.
Copper gets it's name from the Latin cuprum which comes from the island of Cyprus, where it was mined in ancient times. Cyprus was known as "The Sacred Isle of the Goddess Venus". Copper was associated with the planet Venus and was thought, that like Venus, Copper had a balancing, stabilizing and therapeutic effect. Copper is believed to have natural qualities that promote Channelling, Cleansing, and Purification. It is said to be a good conductor of energies from other worldly sources hence its legendary reputation of having natural, mystical and therapeutic qualities. Perhaps this is why Men and Women all over the world have worn Copper bracelets as a healing talisman to treat arthritis for thousands of years. Copper was also associated with the Greek God Hermes, known as a catalyst for increasing mental agility, quick wittedness and romantic power, It is believed to aid self esteem, communication and is used as the shaft of Crystal wands because it facilitates the flow of energy.

0.4mm is quite fine, a little thicker than 0.3mm. Very easy to bend twist and wrap and is normaly used for Jewellery work, Embroidery, Weaving, and Crocheting. This wire is popular for intricate jewellery wire wrapping, projects like headpins, eyepins, tiaras, and creating bead sprays with small beads, such as freshwater pearls, where 0.6mm wire may be just a bit too heavy. If you doing bead work gauges 0.4mm and 0.6mm are the most popular sizes used.

A very popular and versatile size wire that has many 1000's of uses, although not recommend for structures that may bend under pressure. Most commonly used for general beading work it is also suitable for stone wrapping of smaller crystals, semi-precious beads and freshwater pearls. Delicate jump rings can be made with this gauge wire. Also suitable for making wire-wrapped loops, headpins, eyepins and ear-wires. This size is popular for creating scrolls and coils on Cake toppers and is normally used together with 1.2mm. The Brass wire in this gauge is ideal to make Fishing floats.

This is the most popular size wire used in jewellery making. If you are new to wire jewellery this is the wire to start with. Used for making rings, tiara's, creating links, clasps, armatures, eyepins, earwires, wrapping Austrian Crystals and transparent semi-precious beads and most glass beads (but not all) are manufactured with a hole that is 1 mm in size and will accommodate 0.8mm wire. The largest possible wire that can go through the beads is generally chosen because beads, and gemstones, are much harder than the wire and over time they will saw into it. The thicker the wire the longer it will last.

The thicker the wire the stronger and better it is at holding its shape. As a general rule use a thicker wire first and use a finer wire if you then feel it necessary, the choice of size is often down to if it going to be handled. We sell wire in a range of sizes; Gold & Silver plated, Solid Copper, Solid Brass wires.
There are three defined standard methods of measuring wire, the American Wire Gauge (AWG) and the Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) and the Metric system, although the American Wire Gauge system is not normally used in Europe.
Most wires are now sold using the Metric sizes or Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) and for information purposes we have listed the closest SWG size in our listings. We stock wire in a range of sizes from 0.2mm (finest) up to 2mm (thickest) in our ebay shop, with 0.8mm being roughly the thickness of standard size paper clip wire and the most popular size.
Shown below is a wire gauge which can be a useful tool to have. To use simply slip the wire in the slots on the gauge until you find a slot that is just snug, but not tight or loose. This shows the thickness of the wire or sheet metal. Measurements are shown in both Metric and Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) On one side the gauge shows the measurement in metric and on the other side it shows the size in Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) i.e 20 gauge = 0.91mm. For most jewellery projects the most popular sizes are 1mm & 0.8mm the thinner sizes of 0.6mm and 0.4mm are popular for bead work, wire wrapping, binding and twisting together. The 0.4mm Brass, is also a good wire for beading and is used to create lace effects when threaded through beads. Our Brass Wire is solid brass and has a yellow / gold tone which is a colour match of 14K gold. The very fine 0.2mm Silver & Gold plated and 0.3mm coloured copper wire are used for jewellery binding and wire wrapping, wire Stitching, Sewing, Embroidery, Weaving and Crocheting.
The thicker sizes of 1.2mm and 1.5mm are some of our best selling wires, although these thicker sizes are a little harder to manipulate, they hold their shape very well and make attractive bold, chunky design jewellery (especially in Copper) and these sizes are very popular for Cake Toppers, Wire Sculpture, Model making etc. For beginners using larger sizes we would recommend experimenting with copper wire, as it’s softer and more flexible than plated wires.
Wire is made to either dead soft, half-hard, or hard, with dead soft manufactured to a hardness rating of 0, half-hard to a rating of 2, and Hard to a rating of 4. Dead soft wire is extremely soft and pliable (like soldering wire) is easily bent and can make rounded shapes including a spiral, the disadvantage is that it's easily bent out of shape. Hard wire on the other hand, is difficult to work as it tends to spring back when bent. No wire is perfect for every application and in an ideal world, a wire would be easy to bend until in its final shape and then be very stiff, but no such wire exists. All our wires are half - hard which is a good compromise for jewellery & craft work. Copper is a little softer compared to plated wire of similar size and brass wire being a little stiffer than the Copper wire.
Silver & Gold Plating
A question we are often asked is what carat Gold is used and the gold content All our Gold plated wires are drawn from 24 Carat gold and both our Gold and Silver wires are plated onto a quality copper base. With all Gold and Silver plated wires all that varies is the thickness of the plating. The proportion of gold used in gold plated wire is quite small, being only plated a few molecules thick. Our gold plated wire is drawn on average from one ounce troy of a gold per 1500 yards of wire which equates to 16 grains of gold per one metre of wire (approx). Gold prices are always on the increase with Gold bullion date of listing (2008) gold was around £500 per troy ounce Exactly the same Gold plated wire is sold in many craft shops and Internet shops for over £5.50 per coil. Due to our bulk buying power and low overheads we can pass on these savings, and Gold prices are always on the increase
This is a difficult question as its a matter of personal choice. It’s a bit like asking a Chef to name a couple of ingredients for the store cupboard. The list could go on and on. I would suggest just 4 basic pliers to get you started. Round nose pliers, side wire cutters, brass face flat pliers (or Flat nose pliers) and a pair of bent nose pliers. If you wanted to buy more then buy a flush (top) cutting pliers, Needle nose pliers, flat nose pliers and a pair of combination short point pliers.
Other useful tools are a Wire Gauge a Jewellers Repouse hammer and Anvil (excellent tool for hardening, texturing, flattening and spreading wire) Then if the list went on to power tools, a Dremel multi tool which is very useful tool and for which we sell Diamond burrs, Tungsten Carbide burrs, cut off discs and range of polishing accessories in our ebay shop. Brass wire has a multitude of uses limited only by your imagination. Our Brass wire is Medium Soft and bendable by hand and is a little stiffer than Copper wire of the same thickness. Jewellers Rouge Buffing Wax

A high gloss - ultra fine finishing buffing wax bar for use with a Buffing Wheel / Polishing Mop
This Jewellers Rouge is a high quality, ultra fine, slow cutting abrasive used to polish metals like gold and silver, although this rouge is equally suitable for polishing soft metals like brass, copper or pewter. It used on gold by jewellers because it adds colour back to gold. Because this rouge is slower cutting it can also be used for to achieve a very fine cutting edge on the very hardest of materials like stainless steel and for polishing tool steel. Rouge is also used to polish coral and we have written some information below which we hope might be of interest.

Coral is a useful and beautiful jewellery material that has been used since Roman times, it is easy to work and is regarded as a gift of nature in Hawaii and Japan. When found wet on the beach, the surface of black coral is a muddy brown colour and it turns black as it dries, although Coral colours vary from strong Golden, Red, Pink, Yellow-Pink, Blue to Black, with Golden Coral, Velverty Red and Black the most popular colours and Blue regarded as being quite rare.
For jewellery making purposes only the
Corallium rubruma or Corallium japonicuma
Corals species are used.
Coral is a durable material and can be worked with the simplest of tools and takes an excellent polish. Thick solid pieces are best, as thin pieces can be quite brittle. Coral can be bent, twisted, carved or sanded into almost any shape. It is worked and polished in a similar way to hardwood and when polished takes on a high shine which feels and looks like black plastic. Straight segments can make beautiful Pendants and hair pins etc and fingers can be made into beautiful beads.
Please note that all Coral is highly protected and under International laws it is highly illegal to remove it from its natural habitat without licence. It can, however, be collect when washed up on a beach.
Anyone can work with coral. Perhaps here is a good point to recommend that you always wear a dust mask, eye protection and wash your hands after use. The tools needed are fairly basic and consist of a hacksaw, hand files, drill bits, Round nose pliers, Emery cloth, several grades of wet & dry paper, Rouge and a cotton buffing wheel mounted in a drill. Ideally a polishing machine or converted bench grinder fitted with a 6 inch,
triple stitched Cotton buffing wheel at a speed of around 3500 RPM is best ( I have written at the bottom of this page more information on motors) and a Dremel type rotary tool is also a handy tool for carving and detail polishing in those hard to reach areas.
- Cut and rough out the shape using a Hacksaw or Junior Hacksaw
- Smooth down with a File and Emery Cloth
- Sand with Wet & Dry Paper 240 grit then use 320, 400 and finish with 600 grit
- Pre Polish: Its a good idea to pre-polish before going any further, as polishing may be difficult later, especially if you intend to carve, bend or twist the Coral. Any imperfections will also now show up during this pre-polishing stage .If necessary you can correct this or change your design to complement any natural feature in the coral. Any remaining scratches can be removed using the polishing wheel and Green Rouge buffing wax. Keep the wheel well loaded with buffing wax and using moderate to heavy pressure apply short bursts of polishing pressure. This is important to avoid overheating as this can burn your coral. If it does burn, then re sand and polish again
- The shape can be changed if required: to make bends, twists or curves simply soak the polished coral in hot water and gently bend it around a dowel and let it dry for 24 hours, or use the inside of a shape like a can as a template. The steam from a kettle can also be used to form or correct bends and curves. A heat gun can also be used to bend large pieces.
- Carve using a dremel type tool (or use a cordless screwdriver). Tungsten carbide shaped bits (called dental burrs) are excellent for any detail carving and if the coral is to be drilled then drill with a normal twist drill in short quick strokes. This motion cleans the hole and allows the coral to cool slightly. Dont push too hard.
- Epoxy glue can be used to glue any fittings in place.
- Finish polish as normal then run the coral lengthwise (vertically) up and down the polishing wheel, parallel with the grain, using light pressure.

Buffing Machine and Polishing information
A question we are often asked is what speed motor is best ?
If you are going to convert a motor or you have a choice of motors with different speeds, (Speed is normally shown on a side plate) the ideal speed for a buffing machine is between 3600 & 7500 surface-feet-per-minute (SFPM) with the higher speeds giving better results. I have written below the formula for calculating the speed of the motor to the surface speed of a standard 6" buffing wheel by using the motors known RPM speed. If you don't understand or a bit unsure just send me a message.
Surface-feet-per-minute (SFPM) formula = ¼ diameter of the buffing wheel x RPM (revs per min)
Below are examples of some motors using the above surface-feet-per-minute formula
Example; a 6 inch buffing wheel with a 2500 RPM motor
6 inch divided by a ¼ (.25) = 1.5 inches. 1.5 x 2500RPM = 3750 SFPM
Example; a 6 inch buffing wheel with a 3500 RPM motor
6 inch divided by a ¼ (.25) = 1.5 inches. 1.5 x 3500RPM = 5250 SFPM
Example; an 6 inch buffing wheel @ 4500 RPM = 1.5 x 4500 = 6750 SFPM
(6 inch divided by a ¼ (.25) = 1.5 inches. 1.5 x 4200 = 6300 )

You should always ensure that you are completely aware which area is which, otherwise you can have a serious accident. Objects being thrown by a buffing wheel will be traveling at very high speeds and can result in some very unpleasant and potentially deadly accidents..
What is Buffing Wax (also known as Buffing Soap) and how do I use it?
Firstly the technical terms: Buffing or Polishing both mean exactly the same. Buffing Wax or Buffing Soap are, again, different names for the same thing.
Buffing wax / soap is used to cut or colour (getting back to the true colour), to remove scratches and commonly used for sharpening, cleaning & polishing. Buffing Waxes are made from a mixture of waxes and different grade abrasives (normally graded ferric oxide abrasives). The wax is used as the carrier for the abrasive and is applied to the surface of a buffing wheel by friction when the speed of the wheel creates heat which melts the wax. Firstly before you start buffing anything remove any oil, grease or dirt from the workpiece. The secret of applying wax is to use a little and often and to only hold the wax to the wheel for approx 1 second. Say to yourself one hundred and one and that is approx 1 second. Using more wax only reduces the effective polishing action of the abrasive, as the excess wax will only make the surface greasy and over lubricated. This can be seen by the presence of a black line of compound on the work piece. This can be removed by applying a small amount of jewellers pumice to your workpiece and to the buffing wheel and then just re polish.

It is widely used in high tech industry in tumbling, vibratory and barrel polishing machines for very high quality finish polishing of various materials including glass, crystal, plastics and all metals. It is very fluid at the bottom end of its working range resulting in early and extensive flux spread. This ensures that the joint surfaces are well protected from oxidation at the earliest possible point of the brazing operation. This high level of fluidity also helps to reduce flux voids / entrapment in the joint, the low viscosity of the flux aiding its displacement by the brazing filler metal from the joint gap. Easy-flo™ Flux Powder has a working range of 550-800°C. It is suitable for use with silver brazing filler metals melting below 750°C (such as Silver-flo™, Easy-flo™ and Argo-braze™ filler metals). Easy-flo™ Flux Powder can be used on all of the common engineering materials (copper, brass, mild steel and stainless steel), but not aluminium. JM special purpose fluxes are required when brazing aluminium bronze, certain grades of stainless steel, tungsten, molybdenum and tungsten carbide or where protracted heating is involved.
