It is quite amazing what Sony have done with this minidisc recorder. The sound is better than any of my other minidisc players, it's not just an EQ lift, the sound is more open and a wider soundstage is apparent. The battery charges in the player, which seems to be endless, the player stores data so that the disc motor doesn't need to constantly spin. The LED display is excellent and the control system very easy to use. I have made many recordings and the editing features are simple and precise. I have Windows 10 and the SonicStage 4.3 Ultimate Software connects to the player and allows even easier naming, reordering and transfering of music. Hi-MD SP mode sounds very good and has been my choice for recordings, it allows 160 minutes on an 80mins disc but still at a nearly the same bitrate as SP. An absolute gem!Read full review

Fragile device with moving parts, no Bluetooth, Facebook, web browser, colour display or even calculator build in, limited 1Gb memory on very expensive and not made any more removable disc, with software not longer supported ( not aviable ) using abandoned and mostly forgotten Atrac audio format powered by one little battery deliver one of The best mind blowing audio experience can possibly imagine. CD recorded with HI ATRAC+ via optical cable sounds way better than most CD players and can be only compared to hiEnd CD units . Yes you can record uncompressed audio CD format, edit your recordings on device and do pretty much everything as it is professional recording studio in palm of your hand. It has nothing to do with sound offered by convenient flash memory MP3 players. If you don't need thousands track of your favourite music available or work with audio and quality is more important than quantity certainly won't be disappointed by this the best MD Walkman.Read full review

The build quality and design of this unit is simply sensational and it’s ability to record uncompressed PCM mean that MiniDisc finally matched the quality of DAT - Digital Audio Tape. Don’t be deceived by the small size of this device either, it’s DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) and it’s headphone amplifier are both truly excellent. It’s quality of sound reproduction is simply astonishing. If I were to be critical of any point, it would be it’s non-standard rechargeable battery, which is stupid expensive to replace and that’s even if you can source one. Tip: Plug-in some really high quality headphones via the necessary adapters, e.g. Sennheiser HD800’s and be prepared to be blown away by this nearly fifteen year old technology!

I'm a fan of Sony Minidisc audio system. I own many models, and this is the Holy Grail of Sony. its hard to find in good and/or excellent conditions, and is very expensive. One of the reasons to get one is that it's is able to transfer music from and to a PC, using the Sonic Stage Software. Unfortunately, Sony have discontinued the software, and it's available only in some mirror sites. It's is highly recommended to all whose want to own a timeless masterpiece of electronics

I have recorded many gigs with my MZ RH1 over the past 10 years and cannot fault the recordings. However, note the following: 1. Sony SonicStage v4.3 ultimate must be used with Windows 7, but is not compatable with Windows 10. I believe there is other free software which will read Hi-MD discs, but it will not erase discs yet. 2. The jog lever stopped working reliably a couple of years ago, which meant that the only way to erase discs was by SonicStage. Then the USB socket would not make proper contact. I solve this with an electrical contact spray.
