The Spirit of Scotland

Adam, James S

About the book

In this strongly individual and stimulating book James S Adam writes entertainingly of his country and his people with an affectionate percipience and pride in the past story, a passionate assertion of belief in the present and faith in his country’s future. What he unapologetically calls his ‘one-sided, hopelessly-biased, purely-personal account of Scotland and the Scots’ is based on his lively adventurings in many parts of the country and on the interesting characters he has encountered in the by-going. His infectious enthusiasm and engaging forthrightness cannot fail to create a greater understanding of the resurgent spirit which animates Scotland today.

James S Adam is a Dundonian who was schooled first in Dundee and then in Glasgow. He entered newspaper work via the advertisement department of the Scottish Daily Express. After the War, in which he served as a staff officer, he became successively features editor of the Glasgow Evening News and the Daily Record, assistant Editor of the Evening Times, editor of the Weekly Scotsman and Scottish TV Guide, general manager of The Scotsman Publications Ltd, managing director of the Chester Chronicle and later of the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette.

On returning to Edinburgh in 1975 he was invited to organise the great Gathering of the Clans, the success of which owed much to his verve and encyclopaedic knowledge of Scotland. He is a past president of the Scottish Federation of Sea Anglers and of the Scottish Canoe Association, a member of the Scottish Council of Physical Recreation and of the Cairngorm Winter Sports Development Board.
