Star Trek: The Next Generation & Voyager

Phaser Development Booklet and Blueprints

Collection of Rick Sternbach

This is a copy of a big new compilation of sketches and blueprint drawings, derived from designs for Starfleet phasers by your seller, specific to TNG and Voyager. Early in 1987, initially following the original Star Trek series design concept of the combined Type I and Type II hand phaser, the defensive weapons of The Next Generation took form. The idea of combining the two was changed by the producers into two separate props, the small “cricket” and the larger “dustbuster,” both the result of a directive to eliminate pistol grips. We did what we could with that instruction, and in the third season the Type II phaser got a welcome redesign, the basis for later TNG and Voyager hand weapons. The TNG (and DS9) Type III phaser rifle, following in the steps of the larger TOS props, is joined by Voyager’s Type IV compression phaser rifle, that show’s standard heavy duty weapon. Forty-two black and white pages of sketches and notes, plus four full color Canon laser prints of multiple model photos (including the cover) are assembled into one 11”x17” booklet, stapled and edged with heavy black bookbinder’s tape. This is an indispensable collection for any fan of Starfleet props, equally fun for the general design enthusiast or hand weapon prop maker. This volume is from the collection of your seller, TNG and Voyager Senior Illustrator Rick Sternbach. The booklet cover is autographed in gold pen and each page is initialed.
