The very best of a very good band
I'd forgotten just how good Steve Harley was back in the 80s. It's worth buying just for the hit singles (Judy Teen, Make Me Smile and Mr.Soft). Superbly produced.

Cockney Rebel - some big hits
Cockney Rebel (as they were for their first album) first emerged on the scene in 1973 during my early teen years and did make an impression on me, if not on the world at large. My introduction to their music was 'Judy Teen' and that was one of my earliest 7" single purchases. It was followed by 'Mr. Soft' )which I didn't buy) before their biggest hit in 1975, by now under the name 'Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel', when 'Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)' hit Number One in the UK singles chart. But although I was interested in the band, they never had a high enough profile to register very much with me. 'Make Me Smile...' was flavour of the month for a while and still features occasionally on the radio to this day but when I bought this CD, out of a sense of nostalgia, the collection ... Cockney Rebel (as they were for their first album) first emerged on the scene in 1973 during my early teen years and did make an impression on me, if not on the world at large. 'Make Me Smile...' was flavour of the month for a while and still features occasionally on the radio to this day but when I bought this CD, out of a sense of nostalgia, the collection included all the songs I've already mentioned but I recognised none of the other titles, except for the cover of 'Here Comes the Sun', which wasn't worth remembering anyway. 'Sebastian' was apparently a big hit throughout Europe except for the UK and there are some other singles that passed me by but there's nothing strong enough to make an impression on me. There are two live tracks from the 1977 'Face To Face' concert double album but these are frankly poor. I'm sure there must have been better tracks to choose. I did actually see Steve Harley at the Reading Festival in 1983 on a sunny afternoon but memories of that performance are vague and I can't remember anything that he played, although I'm sure it must have included 'Make Me Smile...' Is this album worth having? It's certainly not a "must have" but some of the songs are worth a listen. I may keep it just for 'Judy Teen' and 'Make Me Smile...' but I can't see myself listening very often to the bulk of the album.
