This is my Sugden A21. It is a series 2 model and I have had it about 40 years.
I have been looking for a replacement Sugden A21 for over a 6 months and I can say that this auction is very rare opportunity for you to own one of these legendary original devices. According to Hi-Fi pundits the Sugden A21 is credited with saving the Hi-Fi industry from the Japanese industry goliaths who though Hi-Fi meant high power not high quality. Musicality is inherent in the A21. It sounds as good today as it ever did and aside from the power output it is as good as the replacement.
Having found a replacement I am very reluctant to pass this lovely item on, but it is true I will have no further use and it is better to let someone else enjoy it’s qualities.
I bought it from a dealer in Southport who was using it as a demonstrator in a desk. The case was stored separately and when it was produced it had a small ding in the side. I repaired this with a small chip of teak I acquired. The damage is visible but after 40 years the colour almost matches.
The neon power indicator failed early days and this was cut out of the circuit. Perhaps this was a good thing as the A21 performed better afterwards. This is the last time the case was opened.
The amplifier is 40 years old and the controls the volume control has very slight noise at zero volume.
I do have the original instructions and circuit diagram including factory production notes. Sorry after 40 years the original box is missing.
Sugden specialist notes:
This is a genuine series 2 despite the lack of marking on the front plate. I discussed this with the factory in the 1970s and this was accounted for by the early availability front metalwork. The changes in the circuit diagram were revision made by JES to ease production. For those who do not know; whilst this looks like an A48 it is not. The A21 is vastly superior in every aspect apart from power output.
Whilst the power output is relatively low I had it hooked up to KEF104ab loudspeakers which are particularly inefficient. It was loud enough for me (and the neighbours). You should be fine with modern loudspeakers.
Posting: this item is available in the UK and in EU countries only at
