I have always thought Technics range of German made cd players (390/490/590) sound very good. They all share the same Philips VAM 12 laser/transport assembly, replacements for which are readily available and I have found relatively easy to fit. The 390 does not come with a remote control but is remote ready as I have used one from a 490 or 590 and it works. The 590 has a few more features than the 490, but sound quality is great with all models.

Technics being the brand has good build quality. Output a little on the low side to drive the pre-amp.

The SL PG590 uses a discrete power supply and non resonant base to further improve the sound of the 389 and 490 models. And yes there's a little more refinement and flow. The downside is it looks a bit clunky but don't be put off as it sounds equal to any modern machine up to 350 quid. Plus the replacement lasers are readily available. Where? Well on eBay of course. PS it also really benefits from a recap and because the boards are so neat this is quite easy to do
