THE FALL OF CRETE

BY

ALAN CLARK

PUBLISHED; CASSELL

 EDITION 2000

Winston Churchill famously described the battle for Crete in late May.1941 as 'a head-on collision with the very spearpoint of the German lance'. In fact, the battle was a disaster for the British, Commonwealth and Greek troops on the island: in a few days of bitter and often confused fighting, they were defeated by a better-equipped but erically inferior German force.

Churchill's earlier decision to intervene in Greece had not brought success. The Germans had invaded the country on 6 April, 1941. By the 28th, the last British and Allied forces had been evacuated from the Greek mainland, leaving behind 11,000 of their number as prisoners. Crete's strategic importance was now obvious, and it could only be matter of time before the Germans launched an assault on the island. They duly obliged on 20 May, deploying elite paratroop and glider-borne units which were dropped or landed at four main points on Crete's north coast. Initial German casualties were high yet, constantly and aggressively reinforced, the attackers gained first a vital foothold on the island — the airfield at Maleme — and then control of one objective after another.

Many British and Commonwealth units fought back with determination, as did the Greeks. But ere were appalling failures in both command and comunication: Allied troops were often poorl disposed or ordered to withdraw when they had just gained or held ground at considerable cost. Again and again, initiatives were not taken, precious resources of men or equipment were wasted and opportunities missed. It could all only end in another ignominious evacuation, one which was undertaken by the Royal Navy with heavy losses. Those troops who were left on the island had either to surrender —or fend for themselves as best they could. Crete meanwhile prepared itself for what ,,Were to be four traumatic years of occupation.

Alann Clark tells the story of the battle for Crete the characteristic clarity and concision. Unsurprisingly, he is as admiring of the courage and resolve displayed by the men on the ground as he is critical of the decisions made by their superiors. •rkg out of print, The Fall of Crete can once in take its place in the Clark canon alongside Donkeys and Barbarossa.
