Description

 

 

The Life of Socrates, Collected from the Memorabilia of Xenophon and the Dialogues of Plato, and Illustrated Farther By Aristotle, Diodorus Siculus, Cicero, Proclus, Apuleius, Maximus Tyrius, Boethius, Diogenes Laertius, Aulus Gellius and Others. In Which; the doctrine of that philosopher and the academic sect are vindicated from the misrepresentations of Aristophanes, Aristoxenus, Lucian, Putarch, Athaneus, Suida and Lactantius; and the origin, progress and design of Pagan theology, mytholgy and mysteries explained; Natural religion defended from Atheism on one hand and superstition on the other, and the destructive tendency of both to society demonstrated; Moral and natural beauty analgously compar'd; and the present happiness of manking shewn to consist in, and the future to be acquir'd by, virute only derived from the true knowledge of god. Herein the different sentiments La Mothe Le Vayer, Cudworth, Stanley, Dacier, Charpentier, Voltaire, Rollin, Warburton and others on these subjects are occasionally considered.

Original full leather binding with gilt spine and original leather title label. Cracking to the leather at the rear spine edge and top and bottom of the front spine edge, small chip to the leather on the rear cover. The binding is secure, loosened a bit internally. Lacking the final sheet which is supplied in pencil manuscript- (page 179 which is the last 5 lines of text, with a couple lines of errata on the reverse), lacking the endpapers, signature (James Gordon) with small nick to the title page top edge, some toning and marking in places.

Frontispiece of Socrates, and 6 further vignette copper plates at the start of chapters (Boitard Inv & Sculpt).
