1938 FIRST US EDITION; RARE FIRST STATE

Offered Far Less Than Any Other First Printing On The Market - Don't Hesitate
Up for auction is a true first edition of The Hobbit. Many believe the first US edition of The Hobbit to be the most beautifully designed. The typesetting was easy to read, the margins were wide, the cardstock paper with thicker, there were four color plates of Tolkien's original artwork and the lettering on the cover was in a lovely, deep blue and the dwarf's hood emblem on the spine is in red. Like Frodo or Bilbo, going on an incredible journey and living to tell about it, this is much like these last few copies of The Hobbit that too have survived.
This copy meets all of the first issue points:
1. The bowing hobbit on the title page - he was quickly replaced by a sitting flautist as the hobbit is wearing boots. To be fair to the publishers though, this was drawn by Tolkien in a scene where Bilbo meets Smaug.
2. The front endpapers are of the Wilderland map and the back shows The Lonely Mountain map - it should have been the other way around. It was soon corrected.
3. Chapter seven (VII) is incorrectly titled chapter six (VI) on page 118.
It is very interesting to note that the first printing was released in March of 1938. By November, there was a copy signed out from a library and it was already into the third state! This demonstrates just how short-lived and rare the first state was!
This copy is in lovely condition and the photos really do say all. The binding is tight and square. There is a lovely and small inscription to the edge of the Wilderland map (see photo) that reads, "From Mom and Dad - with dear love, June 1938." This certainly has to be one of the earliest inscriptions ever dated on a US first edition! The endpapers show well, as does the rest of the book! It is now protected in a facsimile dust jacket of the US first edition.
Of course the final installment of Peter Jackson's trilogy will happen this December and things are going to get crazy. Now is the perfect time to purchase a true first edition. Best of luck and to the victor go the spoils.
This is being offered with a $1500 opening bid, which is far below the value. Shipping is FREE to the US or Canada and it will be shipped in a good box and well protected. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me an email.
