Third Pressings (1963)

The gold lettering is now replaced with a more typical yellow block writing. The "All rights of the manufacturer" message around the edge of the label starts with "The Parlophone Co. Ltd." The label does NOT have "Recording first published 1963" or "Sold in the U.K..." statements. The word "mono" (or stereo) on the front cover is larger than in later editions.
On a rare version of this pressing, it appears a small 33+1/3 on label.

This record is very rare and is listed by some in the top 10 of Britain's rarest records and up to £5000 in value.

Here it is at number 7:-

Further information obtained from a previous (£8300) sale found on popsike:-

THE GOLD AND BLACK LABEL FIRST APPEARED FOR THE ONE AND ONLY TIME ON THE BEATLES DEBUT ALBUM. THERE WERE TWO VERSIONS OF IT, KNOWN AS THE FIRST PRESS AND THE SECOND PRESS, BOTH ARE EQUALLY AS RARE AND THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE FIRST PRESS HAD SONGS INCORRECTLY CREDITED TO DICK JAMES, WHEREAS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN NORTHERN SONGS.

PARLOPHONE SHORTLY AFTER THE ORIGINAL RELEASE DECIDED TO CHANGE THE LABELS TO THE MORE COMMON YELLOW AND BLACK AND THUS APPEARED A VERY SHORT LIVED 3RD PRESS (1ST YELLOW AND BLACK) THIS WAS ALSO QUICKLY CHANGED BECAUSE THE 'RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED' TEXT AT 9 0'CLOCK ON THE LABEL WAS OMITTED IN ERROR.

THE 4TH PRESS IS THE ONE THAT SITS IN MOST PEOPLES COLLECTIONS.

ANYWAY BACK TO THE SHORT LIVED 3RD PRESS. A VERY LIMITED RUN OF THIS LABEL APPEARED WITH AN EXTRA 33 1/3 ON IT. THE PARLOPHONE YELLOW AND BLACK LABELS ALL HAVE A LARGE 33 1/3 ABOVE THE YELLOW 'PARLOPHONE' TEXT, BUT THIS 1ST BATCH CAME OUT WITH THE GOLD AND BLACK LABEL'S 33 1/3 (A VERY SMALL ONE) NEXT TO THE CATALOGUE NUMBER AT 9 O'CLOCK. THERE WAS NO NEED FOR TWO NUMBERS AND SO THIS WAS IMMEDIATELY CHANGED TO A COPY THAT JUST HAD THE LARGE NUMBERS.

IT IS RECOGNISED THAT THE COPY WITH BOTH 33 1/3RDS WAS ISSUED IN SUCH SMALL NUMBERS AND IN PARTICULAR THE STEREO COPY. THERE CANNOT BE MORE THAN A HANDFUL IN EXISTENCE

-----------------------------------------------------

Vinyl is Very Good+. A few surface marks are visible on both sides and I've listened to this in full to grade it at Very Good+. There is light background crackle noticeable between tracks and the occasional, perhaps a handful in total, light pop on Side 2. No scratches or jumps.

Ernest J Day flipback Sleeve is Fair (Tears along the flipbacks for 11 on the top and 15cm on the bottom. Some staining on rear and other small tears and scuffs). Inner sleeve is a polylined Emitex inner sleeve.

Summary:- This ultra rare lp has a decent audio falling just short of Excellent with a below average sleeve.

This has been cleaned on a Okki Nokki RCM for the buyer.

Grading system used:-

Mint (M) The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Near Mint (NM) The record looks brand new with no scuffing or any deterioration in sound quality and only the smallest hint that its ever been played. The cover and any additional extras are clean, crisp and with no wear whatsoever.

Excellent (EX) The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good (VG) The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good (G) The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair (F) The record is still just about playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or
defaced.

Poor (P) The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
