Val Kilmer is excellent as the troubled genius that was Jim Morrison. I have watched this several times now and whilst it isn’t as good as the book in my opinion, it is a great watch.

Its hard to believe that The Doors movie was released 20 years ago and having owned the movie in a variety of formats over the years, VHS, Laser Disc and DVD, I held off buying this title on initial release due to a certain highstreet retailer's ridiculous price point of £30. However eBay has allowed me to add the title to my collection and I am most please with the results. Even from the opening montage on the menu, I could see there would be a quantum leap in picture quality. The grading used on the movie rendered early editions (in particular the pan&scan and the Widescreen VHS) very orange, the subtlety of the cinematography lost in 240 lines of resolution. The DVD improved on this somewhat but the end result always gave the impression that the title had been mastered from a converted NTSC version. The Blu-ray blows all other previous home releases to the four winds. The clarity, colour and sound are amazing. The sun drenched Venice Beach and argon lit streets at night are all acurately represented in a beautiful transfer in 1080p. The film itself, like several other Oliver Stone films work more as a museum piece and the style in which the were created have dated somewhat. This is not to say that they lose any of their impact or enjoyment - simply that they hail from another era of film making. I bought this title to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Jim Morrison's passing - July 3rd 2011 - and will watch the full movie (having skipped through on receipt) on that day in tribute to a unique ,musician. On the downside the extras for the anniversary issue are somewhat disappointing. Yes there is a making of - but again no publicity shy Val Kilmer, and only Kyle MacLachlan from the cast. The other (and in my opinion disposable) programme centres on the influence of the Doors on other music makers. As this is the last time I wanted to buy the movie I would have liked a bangs and whistles edition with a Doors (surviving members) commentary, director cast and crew commentary and more features. As it is the disc loses several points for its threadbare extras, but wins a lot of points for the faultless transfer. If you enjoy this film and have a BD player, this is a version to own.Read full review
