This film is set in Norfolk during WWII, an outrageous plot in Himmler's office is played out by Michael Caine (Colonel Steiner) and his German paratroopers. Churchill is the target. The German team pose as Polish Paratroopers conducting exercices in this English rural village. Down the road is coincidentally located a US army base, (Larry Hagman) is the Gun Ho US commander who is keen to make his mark. The story contains many twists, including the skullduggery in Himmler's plan to personally distance himself from the outcome (Robert Duval) plays Steiner's mission commander and is based in Jersey and shot at the end for the ultimate price of the mission's failure. Donald Sutherland plays the Irish Gamekeeper (Devlin) and falls for one of the Village women. Sutherland is the only one who is clever enough to out fox the Allies and Nazi's. Steiner and his men are rumbled when one of them dies on a water wheel rescuing one of the village children, revealing his Nazi Uniform under their Polish outfits. Caine admirably rounds up all of the villagers and places them into the village church. The men trapped still fight on admirably whilst Steiner slips away to continue on to Churchill's country retreat. The convoy are intercepted and warned instead Churchill continues undeterred. Steiner sneaks onto the Patio area and shoots Churchill point blank. The American's are shocked this could happen to the British Prime Minister. However the Churchill who was assassinated was in fact a Double, the real Winston Churchill was overseas visiting Roosevelt..... Personal favourite moments. Hagman clumsily trying to win a medal approach to suicide Devlin and his Irish dog whistle Steiner and his men in Jersey in the pub when the window is broken.Read full review
I found this movie rather dull and boring. I expected it to be moe exciting and interesting given its subject matter and cast. Characters were poorly developed and I didn't care if they succeeded or not. The pace was slow and action non existent. The only good thing was Michael Caine, but even he couldn't save this movie.
Good war film about the germans landing in england during WW2 !! Starring Michael cane, bit boring at the begining but has a great end. 2 hours long so make sure you have plenty of time.
