The Illustrated Horse Management by Edward Mayhew WH Allen 1864 HB Half Leather

Used copy of 'The Illustrated Horse Management; Containing Descriptive Remarks Upon Anatomy; Medicine; Shoeing; Teeth; Food; Vices; Stables; Likewise a Plain Account of The Situation, Nature and Value of the Various Points; Together With Comments on Grooms - Dealers - Breeders - Breakers and Trainers; Also on Carriages and Harness' . The book was written by Edward Mayhew, MRCVS, author of 'The Illustrated Horse Doctor' and other works. It was published by  Wm. H. Allen and Co. of London in 1864 and is presumed to be the first edition. It is 'Embellished with more than 400 Engravings, from Original Designs made expressly for this Work'.

The book is a hardback and measures approx. 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches. It is almost 2 inches thick, and weighs well over a kilo.

The book is half bound in tan leather, with green boards. There are 5 raised bands on the spine, which also has gilt lettering. It has speckled page edges and dark olive-green endpapers. I suspect this binding was made specially for a previous owner, as I have another title, 'The Horse, In The Stable and Field' by J. H. Walsh, with identical binding.

Condition report:

Dustjacket - no dustjacket

External - The head and tail of the spine and the edges and corners of the covers are slightly bumped and rubbed. The leather is slightly scuffed in places but generally clean.

Endpapers - plain olive-green paper. Prelims foxed. Pencil notation top right corner of one prelim.

Pages - very slightly yellowed round the edges. Fingermark on title page, tissue covering frontispiece creased. Text and illustrations otherwise clean, clear and bright. Some creasing where binding tight.

Page Edges - very slightly dustmarked

Binding - some inner hinges cracked but binding still tight and firm

Inscriptions - none

Overall, I would describe this beautiful antique book as being in Very Good Used condition.

General book condition descriptions are as follows: Poor / Breaking: The book is missing pages, pages may be torn and the remaining text may not be legible. Only suitable for dismantling and perhaps mounting any remaining plates. Acceptable: the book has all its pages (although they may not all be attached) and the text is at least legible. However, the binding may not be in particularly good condition and the pages may have considerable foxing and / or staining. There may also be some tears, but they do not obscure any text. Fine as a reading copy for an enthusiast, but not much else. Acceptable '+': the book has all its pages, and they are all clear and legible. The binding may not be perfect, but the pages and covers are all still attached. There may be notations or presentation inscriptions, but they do not obscure the text. Good: the book has all its pages and they are all still firmly attached. The text is still clear and bright, the binding firm and the covers clean. Very good: The book will have been read, but the pages and covers are all clean and clear, the binding firm, and any dustjacket will be in good condition with little sign of wear. The book will appear almost new - but not quite. Please make sure you are happy with these terms before bidding or buying - and thank you for looking!
