These tales of 'The Major' and the scoundrels - from all walks of life! - who populate the part of Ireland of which he is the Resident Magistrate, are constructed from acutely observed portraits by Oenone Somerville and Martin Ross of those with whom they had daily contact in the early years of the 20th century. A marvellous craic of a book, with horses, hounds, the gentry and the common man, all reeling about in a riotous gallop across the pages! To be sure, it is 'another world', and those of a tender disposition should perhaps be warned that there is an awful lot of hunting, but if you have a 'ear' for language and a love of Irish whimsy, this is a joyful read.
