THE NEW FOREST

BY JOHN C. MOORE

PUBLISHED: CHAPMAN & HALL, LONDON

1934 FIRST EDITION HARDBACK WITH FACSIMILE DUST JACKET

Acceptable condition, original black cloth with marking to boards, spine faded, split to spine and upper board, eps foxed in facsimile (photocopied) dust jacket.

186 PAGES WITH 16 BLACK & WHITE ILLUSTRATIONS BY BARRINGTON BROWNE PLUS END PAPER MAPS

APPROXIMATE SIZE IS 7.75" X 5"

MR. MOORE has walked many hundred miles in the course of his wanderings through England, Wales, North Africa, and Spain: but, when a book upon the "New Forest" was proposed to him by his publishers, he told them that he was tired of Shanks's pony, and demanded to be provided with a horse. Hence it happens that the dreamy, saturnine, philosophical and extremely original creature, called Simon, appears for the first time as Mr, Moore's companion, trotting and cantering across the country with Mr. Moore upon his back.

This exploration of the New Forest differs from Mr. Moore's earlier travel-books in that the author, in his own words, ''has tried for the first time to paint a still-life portrait." ''The Welsh Marches" was a picaresque adventure: "The New Forest" is an attempt at an intimate study of a small corner of England. Mr. Moore reminds us that the New Forest "cast its shadow across the pages of Domesday." William the Conqueror Is not forgotten in his pages, nor William Rufus of the red face, the red temper, and the swift, mysterious fare There is, In fact, plenty of the romance of history in the book ; but: Mr. Moore can never be serious for very long. The reader who proposes to follow him must be prepared to drink many tankards of beer, to take his part in a darts match at a wayside inn, to go cluck-shooting on the foreshore, gallop hard at: a pony round-up, enjoy a Saturday night at Lymington, and ride thirty miles a clay across the ancient heath and scrub and woodland of the New Forest, in company with Mr. Moore and his two original horses. If he does not enjoy his entertainment it must surely be his own fault
