The VICTORIAN PICTURE BOOK 1897 Childs Colour plate book.

 W. H. STACPOOLE:

The Victorian Picture Book.

Illustrated by J. R. Sinclair

Published by Dean & Son, Ltd. Fleet Street, London. 1897.

A 60 page large folio book approximately 15 inches high. With 10 full page lithographic plates by J. R Sinclair and a "glazed" frontispiece. The frontispiece is particularly attractive historically, shows children talking from Britain across the Atlantic to their counterparts in the USA. There is also another plate depicting Edison's invention. Each plate has scenes either showing the period when Victoria stated her reign in 1837 and the inventions in the period of her reign from 1837 to her Jubilee year of 1897. Includes; Cabs & transport, Police, Post-Office, Firemen, Trades, Telegraphy,  Military and Naval, Trains, etc.

There are black and white illustrations also.

CONDITION: Beautiful embossed red cloth with bevelled edges, The dark charcoal endpaper at the front has some erased chalk? marks, and  there is a tiny bit of wear to the lower edge of the spine, otherwise an excellent copy of this SCARCE and Really RARE book.

There is also a small oval label to the inside back board at the bottom of the endpaper "Mrs Peck's Dolls Home, Regent St. Repairs of All Kinds". So once owned by someone repairing expensive toys and dolls in the expensive shopping street in London and the age looks right for the period of the book!

Due to the age and scarcity of this work I would rate this as Near Fine, despite the odd wear described.
