Wind in the Willows is a very well-known and much-loved book. Written around 1908, the story of the 3 animal pals (4 if you include Badger, 5 if you count Otter as well) has stood the test of time and is adored by many people. My own 6 year old grand-daughter can't get enough of it, whether it is me reading to her or her tackling it with my help. It is a magical world of rivers, country lanes, reeds and fields and a wonderful tale of friendship, loyalty, and good triumphing in the end. Tales of the Willows is a follow-on, but by a different author and more recently penned. Those who haven't read Wind in the Willows should find it entertaining enough, but those who have are(in my opinion) in for a let-down. Although it is meant to be "more of the same", with the same locations and characters, the flavour and charm of the original has been lost, and the characteristic traits and behaviour of the main animals has changed. I've read half of it and I don't want to read any more, in case it ruins the memories, recollections and images of something very precious that are stored in my mind.Read full review

SPOILER ALERT - this 'sequel' is gob-smackingly upsetting. I didn't much like the author's Duncton Wood series, so I should have known better, but - Toad, Mole, Rate and Badger all DIE. Rattie's beloved river is despoiled by effluent from up-stream factories and The Wild Wood is totally cut down to make way for house-building. It got to the part where there is an illustration of Badger's gravestone and I just couldn't BEAR it any longer. Yes, I know it's only a story, but this was an absolute travesty, especially if one if even remotely ecologically aware, as it is the kind of thing that happens too often in reality. Having loved and treasured the original for over 50-years, this story depressed me for a LONG time.

An enjoyable ending to these excellent stories of the riverside folk. A relaxing read when you can say goodbye to your 'friends'. Possibly the best of William Horwood in the 'Willows' series.
