Item specifics

Seller notes: Excellent condition overall, there are a few firing defects only, see photos. This is a fabulous piece of social history shows cycling at the end of 19th century as important as it is today! A great investment piece to celebrate the Tour De France this weekend.

antique cycling jug

Pre 1900s

A wonderful piece of social history in this Doulton Lambeth Art Nouveau Pate sur pate Cycling Jug. See photos to appreciate the detail on this jug. There are three sections showing the different types of cyclists from this late 19th century period. The wording on the bottom of each handcarved pate sur pate panels say Road, Path and Military and the detail of the cyclists is very clear for the style of clothes and bikes used and worn in those days. There are three racing cyclists in one panel with the word Path at the bottom, then there are two gentlemen and an elegant lady with the word Road at the bottom. The final panel show two soldier cyclists and a bugler blowing his horn and this has the words Military at the bottom.

It is a fine example of its kind and would be a superb souvenir of the Tour de France being in England and in fact the jug is located in Harrogate so can be picked up this weekend while visiting for the big event !!

It is glazed on a buff ground and the jug has wonderful tubelined Art Nouveau borders glazed to a mottled bluey green. The jug stands 7 1/2" tall x 4 1/2" dia. stamped to the base Doulton Lambeth England and incised with the artist mark EH for artist Ethel Hawkins.

In excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration and exceptionally crisp tubelines. Many of these jugs (Cricket, Cycling etc) from this period suffer from loss to the tubelines and there are only a few dark brown spots on the buff ground.

The jug is heavy and weighs 1.650 kg and will be parcelled very safely for posting or can be collected in Harrogate by arrangement.

Additional information on condition: there are two tiny side nicks out of the cyclists front wheels on the Military panel, which I should mention for complete accuracy these show clearly on the close up photos of this part of the jug. The two other panel vignettes are complete and have two tiny rougher patches on the wheels but seem to be over glazed so this would indicate they have always been slightly rough to touch. I would ask any bidders to study the photos as part of the description of condition as this is an old stoneware jug and has some small areas of firing discolouration in the buff glaze. Overall it is excellent condition compared to similar jugs of this type.
