Trees in the Landscape

by Graham Stuart Thomas

ISBN 0719557240

Here is a new edirion of Graham Stuart Thomas's classic book. long unobtainable. In his introduction. Douglas Chambers writes: 'this simple practical manual is deepened by a love of country-side. an intimate knowledge of trees. and an awareness of the difficulty of getting the business of planting just right'.  The book begins by tracing the influence of the eiqhteenth-century English landscape movement, and in particular Humphry Repton's principles, on the way we use trees to create landscape. Thomas then shows us how to evaluate trees, how to predict their future growth and shape, how to create perspectives, conceal boundaries and enlarge vistas; and on a smaller scale how to use foliage colour and size gradation to suggest space and distance. Problems of drainage, climate and ground level are discussed. together with the peculiarities and compatibilities of various species of trees. A comprehensive list of suitable trees and shrubs is included. as well as a chapter
on 'Pracrical Points in Regard to Planting' which relates to general principles of height, shape and speed of growth to locally available choices of trees.
