The population of wild deer in Great Britain is probably over one million and, depending on their management, they represent either a substantial national asset or a serious pest. The Forestry Commission estimates that every year it spends more than one million pounds in protecting its forest investment from deer damage. In contrast to many other wildlife species, deer continue to thrive and a substantial annual harvest is essential. Venison commands a ready market. Additionally, sporting rents can result in significant income to many woodland owners and hard-pressed estates.

The practical management of woodland and deer is therefore a very necessary skill in intelligent land usage and yet has received scant attention. Tress and Deer is the first book which sets out in detail a policy for the successful integration of forestry with the management and control of deer. The suggestions made are intended to ensure that humane deer management may be combined with other enterprises. The advice given may appear elementary, but it is still the distillation of sound biological principles and many years of experience covering both English and Scottish conditions. This is a book which will benefit foresters, farmers, gardeners, naturalists, sportsmen, and the animals themselves.

The Author:

Richard Prior trained in farming and agricultural engineering and served for 16 years with the Forestry Commission, being mainly concerned with deer studies. In 1977 he joined The Game Conservancy and is now Deer Consultant to the GC and to the British Deer Society. He writes for the major sporting magazines and has written previous books on deer, their stalking and management.
