1978 TRIUMPH SPITFIRE 1500 (with Overdrive) - FOR RESTORATION. EASY SPRING PROJECT.
COMES WITH ALL BODY PANELS TO COMPLETE - AND SOME MECHANICAL PARTS - IN TOTAL WORTH £875 inc VAT
This Spitfire has been off the road for a long time whilst undergoing body repairs but the restoration has been taken over by events. I started on the off-side as this area required the most work, removing the front wing, headlamp support panel, lower 'A' post, outer sill, inner strengthener and full floor panel, along with the rear wing allowing localised repairs to be carried out to the boot floor corners and the rear inner wing area and the corners of the boot lid. All of these have been replaced and welded in with new panels or custom made steel work where required. The new Heritage outer sill, front wing and rear wing panels are ready to be fitted which will complete the repairs to the offside.
New panels are available and are included to complete the restoration of the bodywork. The Near-side is not nearly as bad as the O/S was, requiring only localised repairs to the lower part of the rear wing (panel supplied), a new full length sill (supplied), probably the inner sill strengthener (supplied) which will be exposed when the outer sill is removed. A few minor localised repairs are required at the very back of the floor panel which would be easy once the sill is removed, allowing better access and at the rear mounting of the optional Roll-Over Bar. Although it's not very pretty, i kept the roll bar as it adds hugely to the rigidity of the car - not to mention the safety aspect.
Mechanically - all parts are there with the engine and overdrive gearbox still in situ. The car has covered 57,000 miles from new and the engine is a reconditioned unit supplied by Rimmer Bros (receipt available) - the only part missing from the car is the fuel tank which sprang a leak. A new one costs £150- incl VAT and a S/H one can be sourced fairly easily. The car already comes with many new parts and body panels fitted- as above, totalling £873 inc VAT at today's prices.
These include new brake discs, front shock absorber/spring assemblies, front lower trunnions, upper ball joints, pair chrome bonnet locks, door hinge pins, master cylinder gaitor and the body panels - Heritage Panels (from the original BL tooling and guaranteed to fit) front wing, inner outer front wheel arch, lower 'A' post panels, rear wing, rear inner wheel arch, full floor panel -fitted already, sill strengthener, sill end plates, rear lower wing repair panels, and both outer sills. All the trim is present and in good condition.
The chassis is in good condition and has never been separated from the car. The brakes will require a complete strip down with replacement of all seals and fluid.
This car is a non-runner and will need transported on a low-loader or similar. Collection only.
Good luck with your bid - it would be great to see it flying over the tarmac again.
