UNIQUE VINTAGE PROFESSIONAL  DOLORES HADLEY MARIONETTE  PUPPET

This truley unique performing puppet  is from the estate of a past president of The Puppeteers of America inc. As a University Professor he taught Theater, Speech and Puppetry for over thirty-five years.  It resided in his care for the past  ten years.

This Unique Professional Puppet Performs quite well.

The Paper mache' and fabric body construction is well executed. The head is also fabricated in paper mache'.

The marionette measures 26 inches in height . Despite its' large size it is light weight.

It is strung from a wood "Airplane" control with a pegged removable legbar.

It is short-strung for display or "Cabaret" performing.

The standard stringing configuration includes sholder strings and elbow strings actuated by a  toggle on the main control bar.

This charming and whimsical

Wood Troll Marionette

was created for a 1979

 marionette production by:

DOLORES HADLEY

of "La Famille de Marionettes."

DoLores is featured on the cover of the WINTER  1999 issue of The Puppetry Journal. There is a well written article and several additional photos of her puppets in this issue as well. Several of her unique creations were exhibited at the recent Puppeteers of America National Puppetry Festival in Atlanta.

I first met Dolores in 1980 at the International Puppetry Festival in Washington DC.

She was gracious and charming in addition to being remakably talented. I had first seen her maronettes in the mid 1970’s. I was immediately struck by her Unique and original style of sculpting and design. She claimed her greatest influences were Bil Baird and Frank Paris, both of whom she enjoyed keeping company with on occasion. The last time I saw her was during the P of A National Festival at East Lansing, Michigan.

I am including a little biographical information for those not familiar with her career.

Born in 1926 in Kansas City, MO, she lived in Independence, MO.

Marionette performances at birthday parties evolved into community center workshops and shows under the auspices of the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department.

The Parks Department  "Puppet Wagon" toured the parks each summer with a different "theme" show. One summer it was about the Lewis and Clark expedition, but using her own special sense of humor, Lewis became just “Lou” and Clark was “Cluck”. Other summers they did "Popeye, Olive Oil and Sweet Pea" and "Dr. Dolittle".

In 1970 she attended the P of A National Puppet Festival in Nashville.TN.

Then in 1973 she heard that "Worlds of Fun" was looking for a marionette show. DoLores called for an audition and was hired on the spot. Thus started a twenty-three year career of ten, twenty-minute shows a day, seven days a week, April through October. These were variety shows performed in cabaret style

They worked out of a Gypsy Wagon purchased from MGM Studios prop department. Each year a new show was created over the winter months. For several years they were moved to the main stage and then back to the Gypsy Wagon.

"La Famille Marionettes" also performed during the winter at local Malls, with the Kansas City Philharmonic, and did "Breakfast With Santa" for the Jones Department Store.

In her last years she went into doll making, again winning praise and prizes for her creativity. DoLores will be remembered by friends and family as a gracious attractive woman, who had a unique flair and zest for living.

Dolores died May 29, 1999.

There is some minor paint wear which would be expected for a Performing Puppet of this vintage.

He would be a valued addition to any collection of marionette memorabilia.

The Overall Condition is EXCELLENT for its obvious age.

While it is tempting to add this to my personal collection, space and practical considerations dictate that I find another suitable "home" for this great example of the puppeteers art.
