~ A collection of 53 photographs of the American WWII Grumman Aircraft 'Avenger' and 'Hellcat' ~

An opportunity to own this fine collection of photographs of US Navy Grumman fighterplanes.

The collection includes 52 black and white and one colour photograph. Sources include manufacturer, U.S. Marine Corps., Air Ministry, U.S. Navy and other agency photographs, with many compiled from private albums.

The pictures feature the aircraft in many situations, including fine air-to-air portraits (e.g. of Hellcat F (N) 16, and another of 7-6), servicing, carrier operations, the Avenger air-borne in formation, wings folding on a carrier deck, Avenger code 95 wearing 53 mission markings, various technical views of cockpit and radio station instrument panels, Hellcats lining up for carrier take-off and others similar, some with attached notes. Also a collection of private images relating to the P-47 Thunderbolt.

The photographs are mounted using corner mounts  on A4 paper, and are presented in a folder of clear plastic wallets. Most are annotated or labelled on the reverse.

Please see images below for comprehensive images of the complete collection.

~ About the Aircraft ~

The Grumman TBF Avenger (designated TBM for aircraft manufactured by General Motors) was a torpedo bomber developed initially for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and eventually used by several air or naval arms around the world. It entered U.S. service in 1942, and first saw action during the Battle of Midway. Despite losing five of the six Avengers on its debut, it survived in service to become one of the outstanding torpedo bombers of World War II. Greatly modified after the war, it remained in use until the 1960s.

The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a carrier-based fighter aircraft developed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat in United States Navy (USN) service. Although the F6F bore a family resemblance to the Wildcat, it was a completely new design powered by 2,000 hp. Some tagged it as the "Wildcat's big brother".The Hellcat and the Vought F4U Corsair were the primary USN fighters during the second half of World War II. Postwar, the Hellcat aircraft was systematically phased out of front line service, but remained in service as late as 1954 as a night fighter in composite squadrons.
