Barker served as Commanding General of US Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The photograph is in very good used condition. The dignitary and the MajGen are unknown. The backside is marked " This paper manufactured by Kodak". It measures approx. 7" x 5".

Major General David B. Barker - Deceased

Major General David B. BarkerMajor General David B. Barker retired June 30, 1987.

General Barker was born in Needham, MA. He graduated from Natick High School, Natick, MA, in 1947 and received his B.S. degree in Chemistry/Biology from Tufts College in Medford, MA, in 1951. He also holds a M.A. degree in Personnel Administration from George Washington University (1966). While attending Tufts College, he was a member of the Platoon Leaders Class program, and was commissioned a Marine second lieutenant on June 1, 1951.

Upon completing The Basic School, Quantico, VA, the following November, he was assigned to Camp Pendleton prior to being ordered to Korea for duty with the 1st Marine Division. As a member of the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, he participated in combat operations in Korea from March 1952 to March 1953. For his service as Forward Observer, Battery Executive Officer, and Assistant S-3, respectively, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V". While overseas, he was promoted to first lieutenant in December 1952. Returning to the U.S. in April 1953, he served at Camp Lejeune, as Commanding Officer of an Artillery Battery, 2d Marine Division, until June 1955. He was promoted to captain in March 1954.

From June 1955 until August 1957, he served as Naval Gunfire Officer/Atomic Weapons Employment Officer/Supporting Arms Coordinator, Staff of the Commander, Amphibious Group 4, at Norfolk, VA. He returned to Camp Lejeune where he served as Commanding Officer, 2d 811 Howitzer Battery (SP), Force Troops, until 1959, when he became the Inspector-Instructor, 3d 105mm Howitzer Battery, USMCR, at Ft. Worth, TX. In April 1962 he was promoted to major.

He completed the Amphibious Warfare School, Quantico, in May 1963, and then served for three years as Head, Fire Support Coordination Branch, Marine Corps Landing Force, Development and Education Command at Quantico. During part of 1966, General Barker was a member of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Special Study Group. In October 1966, he assumed duty with the 3d Marine Division in Vietnam (October 1966-November 1967) serving first as Plans Officer then as Commanding Officer, 3d Battalion, 12th Marines. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in November 1966. In December 1967, he was transferred to Headquarters, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, Hawaii, and served as Assistant G-3 until June 1970.

General Barker was a student at the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, AL, from July 1970 until June 1971. He assumed duties as Head, Research and Analysis Branch, Politico-Military Division; Studies, Analysis and Gaming Agency, in the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, from July 1971 until July 1974. While serving in this capacity, he was promoted to colonel in May 1972.

From July 1974 until July 1975, General Barker was Commanding Officer, 12th Marines, 3d Marine Division(Rein), FMF, Pacific, Okinawa. He returned to Headquarters Marine Corps in August 1975 and was assigned duty as Deputy Director, Operations Division, Operations and Training Department. While serving in this capacity, he was selected in February 1977 for promotion to brigadier general. He was assigned duty as Director, Operations Division, on March 1, 1977 and promoted to brigadier general on April 1, 1977. General Barker was assigned duty as the Commanding General, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, NC, in June 1978. He was promoted to major general on May 5, 1980. On August 1, 1981, he assumed duty as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Training at Headquarters Marine Corps. During July 1982, he was ordered to Japan for duty as the Chief of Staff, U.S. Forces. During September 1984, he assumed duty as Commanding General, 4th Marine Division (Rein.) Fleet Marine Force, USMCR, New Orleans, LA. He served in this capacity until retirement on June 30, 1987.

General Barker's decorations and awards include: the Distinguished Service Medal; the Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit with Combat "V" and gold star in lieu of a second award; the Meritorious Service Medal; Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V"; Combat Action Ribbon; Presidential Unit Citation; Navy Unit Citation; National Defense Service Medal with bronze star; Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars; Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with two silver stars; Second Class Order of the Sacred Treasurer; Korean Presidential Unit Citation; Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Gallantry Cross Color with Palm; United Nations Service Medal; and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device.
