BOGNOR REGIS, West Sussex, United Kingdom
This is the last, largest, and rarest of my four Robert Wells 18th century rumbler / crotal bells.
In 35 years I have only seen one RW bell of this size ( size 28 cast just below the loop), in a museum and have never seen one offered for sale.
I believe there are only two larger sizes – numbers 30 and 32 – although I have never seen either.
This is a large son of a gun weighing in at 1152gms or 2lb 8 and 5/8th oz
Approx overall height (including loop) 124mm or 4 and 7/8th inches.
Approx overall diameter 4 and ½ inches.
The bell is in original condition with no repairs.
The size comparison in the photographs is against an English £1 coin.
As I have four different sizes of RW bells on ebay at the time of listing I will combine postage for any bidder who wins more than one.
Please note however that these are HEAVY items which will be sent by signed for insured post (if the price realised is over £41), to protect both the buyer and seller and this is not cheap.
The Wells Foundry was established in 1755 by Robert I (b.1725), the only son of William Wells, a local blacksmith. Robert I ran the foundry until his death in 1781, at which time, he was working jointly with his son, Robert II (b.1756). Robert II was joined by his younger brother, James (b.1771), around 1790, and when he retired in 1798, he left James in charge. For some time, the business did very well under James, but circumstances changed, and in 1825 it went bankrupt and was sold to Thomas Mears II of the Whitechapel Foundry.
