VERY RARE ANTIQUE J W NORIE & CO ARCH JOINT SECTOR RULE BOXWOOD ENGINEERS RULER

Description

STUNNING RARE EARLY 19TH CENTURY OX BONE

2 SECTION ARCH JOINT ENGINEER'S FOLDING SECTOR RULE

BY JOHN WILLIAM NORIE & CO. (1816 ~1839)

Superb condition

Thick construction

Unusual and highly detailed copper-coloured arch hinge

Unusual length - 11 7/8ths inches

Extra navigational scales not found on other sectors

12 inset compass points

All holding pins

This is an extrodinarily attractive early 19th Century 2 section folding Engineer's sector rule, made from thick oxbone.

One of the standout features of this rule is the arch hinge. Arches on sectors are rare enough, and the sign of very high quality. In this case, the arch hinge is of an interesting design, and appears to be made of a copper-coloured material rather than the far more usual brass or nickel alloy. I've not seen one like this before. The hinge itself is incredibly detailed, with very fine scale marks, digits and scale labels.

This little rule measures an unusual 11 7/8ths inches when folded out, and folds up to a neat 6 1/4 inches for fitting inside a drawing case, Etui or pocket.

It's made by (and marked by) John William Norie & Co, of 157 Leadenhall St, London. John W Norie started his working life in 1799, and made sextants, quadrants, drawing instruments and telescopes at the Navigation Warehouse and Naval Academy in Leadenhall Street, in what is now the City of London district - the modern day financial heart of the capital. Back in Norie's day, Leadenhall Street would be far better known as the home of the East India Company.

This sector has most of the usual scales associated with sector rules - Poll scales, S T T and L S C and Tan, Sin  and an extended Num scale. This also has the full compliment of 12 tiny compass indent points. It's also loaded with a few more navigational scales than are usually foundon a standard sector - labelled "I.M.", "C", "L", and "H".

Condition: As you can tell from the pictures -  absolutely superb. Check the supersize pictures for a better idea of condition. Joint as firm and secure as when first made. The two original holding pins remain. Arch hinge in beautiful condition. Truly a superb example. Just one small chip on the top surface of one edge is the only damage from its years of use.

One of the finest examples of a sector that I have owned.

As with all my items, this will be securely wrapped to get to you in the present condition.

I always try to post at or below cost, and I will always offer a combined shipping discount for multiple purchases.

I try to describe - with photos and the description - my items as accurately as possible, and to the best of my knowledge. My items are almost always used, of some age and not always possible to accurately date or attribute - so it is not always possible to describe with 100% accuracy. I will however offer a full refund of purchase price and outward p&p cost if this item has been misrepresented by me on this ebay page.
