~ KARL LAGERFELD ~
Karl Lagerfeld is perhaps the most influential and iconic designer in the world.
Lagerfeld is the ‘master of reinvention’ according to Vogue, having repeatedly transformed himself and his labels. Lagerfeld is most famous for being the head designer and creative designer of Chanel, Italian fashion house Fendi, and his own eponymous label.
Born in Germany to a wealthy family, Lagerfeld finished his schooling at the Lycée Montaigne in Paris, where he majored in drawing and history. After leaving school in 1955, Lagerfeld was hired as Pierre Balmain's assistant after winning the coats category in a design competition. After three years at Balmain, he moved to Jean Patou where he designed two haute couture collections a year for five years. His first collection was shown in a two-hour presentation in July 1958, but he used the name Roland Karl, rather than Karl Lagerfeld. The first collection was poorly received somewhat ironically.
A few years later, in 1964, after attempts to return to school and follow paths away from fashion design, Lagerfeld begun to freelance for French fashion house Chloe, at first designing a few pieces a season. As more and more pieces were incorporated, he soon designed the entire collection. In 1972, Lagerfeld began to collaborate with Italian fashion house Fendi, designing clothing and accessories, and later moved to Chanel.
Forever creative to his core and passionately interested in the world around him, Karl Lagerfeld has worked with and continues to work with a variety of prestigious brands and people. In 2002 Lagerfeld designed the costumes for the Carmen sequences in the Zeffirelli film Callas Forever and has designed outfits for international music artists Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen to name just a few, and for many celebrities, society beauties and members of the British royalty family.
In addition to fashion design, Lagerfeld is also a sought after photographer, most notably producing Visionaire 23: The Emperor's New Clothes, a series of pictures of models and celebrities. He also personally photographed Mariah Carey for the cover of V magazine in 2005. In addition to his editorial work for Harper's Bazaar, Numéro and the Russian and German editions of Vogue, Lagerfeld photographs advertising campaigns for the houses under his direction (Chanel, Fendi and his eponymous line) every season.
Karl Lagerfeld will go down as one of fashion’s greatest designers in the history books. Never before has one man had so much success or acclaim as a designer as he has, with Vogue crowning him the ‘unparalleled interpreter of the mood of the moment” for his work with Chanel, and for his own label which he claims channels “intellectual sexiness”. In 2011 Lagerfeld was awarded the Gordon Parks Foundation award in recognition of his work as a designer, photographer and filmmaker.
There is no doubting the impression Karl Lagerfeld has had on the fashion world, and to see and wear his clothing is to know why he is so adored, beautifully conceived and tailored, such imaginative and forward thinking designs and always sexy and stunning!!!
