Up for perusal is a stunningly beautiful mid-century California Pottery lobster soup tureen. This tureen is made up of 4 pieces: 1 lid, 1 ladle, 1 tureen bowl, 1 under-plate.

This tureen is absolutely gorgeous, featuring a sculpted lobster-shaped handle on top. The lobster looks quite realistic with varying reds and black how-lights to show texture and depth. The tureen is majolica style with a cabbage leaf texture. The base color of the tureen is white with a very light misty blue overtone. The ladle's hue matches the base color of the tureen (white with the misty blue hue).

The tureen bowl measures 14" from handle-to-handle, 10" at the top interior opening and 4 1/4" in height. The oval under-plate measures 12" in length and 9 1/4" wide. The lid measures 10 3/4" in length and 7 7/8" wide. The lobster measures 7 1/2" in length (not counting the claws). The ladle measures 9 1/2" in length.

The base of the tureen's bowl and under-plate are incised "CALIF USA 616 S".

The condition of this tureen is excellent with only a few faint craze lines. There are no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, missing or repaired parts. The ladle is in very nice condition as well with no chips, cracks or repairs.

This is quite a special piece for anyone who appreciates haute cuisine, especially seafood dishes like bouillabaisse or other soups/stews. I do not recommend using this in the oven. I highly recommend tempering this with hot water just before filling with hot food so it does not crack. I do not know if this vintage pottery has a lead content, if any.
