I am proud to present you this gorgeous, nostalgia inducing 'Peacocks' housecoat, overall. I have quite a collection which I have just retrieved from my attic and I shall list several in the next few days..so if you love these type of ladies overalls please check my listings often!
This one does not have the original label but I sold another identical one a few months ago in pink and it was from PEACOCKS and same size just a different colour and they were both found together so they must have belonged to the same lady.
The kind that our mums, aunties and grandmas used to wear on a daily basis to do their housework whilst keeping their pretty skirts, blouses and slips underneath nice and pristine! should an unexpected visitor call you could then remove the housecoat and presto...a totally gorgeous feminine attired housewife! Of course these lovely overalls are also used for hairdressers of yesteryears, beauticians and such...
This particular overall is just wonderful, in a gorgeous girlie turquoise with contrasting white checks and smooth turquoise panel above the bust and the sleeves. The overalls have deep pockets to put all your cleaning essentials in which are cuffed with the matching turquoise and white checks!... Gorgeous poly nylon fabric that will make any aspiring 'Stepfords wife' proud! The collar is also made of the checked fabric.
This lovely overall is cut in a mid length and it has lovely long sleeves which are neatly cuffed. This fab vintage housecoat buttons sexily on the front with four old fashioned pearlescent large buttons..oohhh I do love buttons I must say! and the collar is neatly double layered, so that it looks really smart in a 1970s fashion with its checked pointy shaped collar.
The yoke and cuffs on sleeves have really attractive neat scalloped piping.
There are two cuffed nylon pockets on each side on the front and they are double layered at the top cuffs in sexy swishy rustly fabric.
One of the pockets has two small holes close to each other which I have managed to cover with a pretty silky satin lemon coloured pussycat bow as you can see in the photos. It actually looks so lovely and the yellow contrasts beautifully with the turquoise and it gives the overalls a really nice feminine touch.
In lovely vintage condition. Has been gently hand laundered in scented suds and carefully kissed with a warm iron to refresh from storage.
No label on this one but sold an identical pink version months ago. Label as I can still see in my stock photos read: "Peacocks, Size W. Made in Great Britain. Polyester/ Nylon"
Bust: 42" stretching to 44"
Arm Openings at the top: 18"
From collar to where sleeve starts 6"
A little history about 'Peacocks', the provenance of this lovely vintage overall!
Peacocks was founded in Warrington in 1884 as a family run business. In true Victorian style Peacocks Penny Bazaar, as it was then known, sold anything and everything.
Over the years Peacocks Penny Bazaar expanded, opened more stores and the ranges available changed to keep up with the times. It was kept a family business being handed down from father to son through generations of the Peacocks family.
Relocation and expansion
In the 1940s the company relocated to Cardiff, where its headquarters remain. This move had a profound effect on the development of the group; its growing network was concentrated in south Wales and southern England for many years. In the early 1990s, Peacocks grew further and in December 1999 the firm was floated on the London Stock Exchange. In 2005, a £400M management buyout was agreed, supported by Goldman Sachs and hedge funds including Och-Ziff and Perry Capital that own 55% of the new holding company. The company delisted from the exchange on 1 February 2006, again becoming privately owned.
In line with the increased demand for value-for-money fashion Peacocks has begun to provide high fashion womenswear, menswear and childrenswear. High street stores have been revamped together with a steer towards prime locations.
Adhering to the idea of a one-stop-shop Peacocks has many concessions with other brands. To date Peacocks has concessions in, Co-Operative and Somerfield
stores around the United Kingdom
. More recently in May 2010 it was announced that Peacocks has signed a deal with Morrison's
. The concession is set to be opened as part of a refurbishment at the retailer's store in Idle, Bradford.

If you are of an age when you remember a lot of ladies rather older than your tender years wearing these, you might just love to find yourself dressed in one of these irresistible vintage nylon or polyester overalls. A lot of them would have been purchased from vendors such as Peacocks, Woolworths and such... Wear with your best clothes underneath or just with a lovely delicate petticoat, bra and panties like our mums sometimes did!
