::: Vintage 1960s/70s electric guitar :::
Here, up for auction, is my (modified) vintage 1970s electric guitar (in dark sunburst). I say "1970s", but I cannot be completely sure. It could even be earlier. To tell you the truth, I don't really know anything about the origin of this guitar. It could be Japanese-made -- but, I wouldn't want to say for certain. Put it this way, I have not seen another one like it. A few years ago, I started to buy and collect rare, interesting-looking guitars. It was a bit of a lottery, really, which yielded very mixed results: some were clearly poorly-made, old budget guitars, and some were genuine "diamonds in the rough". This particular guitar falls into the latter category. I decided to keep hold of this guitar when I bought it a year ago as it played beautifully, I liked the quality of it, and I thought it looked very cool. It did, however, need a bit of attention, but I could definitely see the potential in it. Over the past year, the guitar has undergone some major work. Not by myself, luckily, but by a very skilled guitar builder/luthier based here in Bristol. The old, worn pickups have since been replaced with Rickenbacker-style "toaster" pickups, which produce a beautifully warm and unique sound (the scratchplate was carefully re-cut to accommodate them). The old vibrato/tremolo has also been replaced with a Fender Jaguar-style tremolo system, which works perfectly (some of the body was skilfully hollowed-out to accommodate this larger tremolo system). Furthermore, a tune-o-matic bridge has been added; the tuners/machineheads have been replaced with Wilkinson Deluxe "Kluson-style" tuners; the volume/tone knobs have been replaced with Jaguar-style knobs; and, the input jack has been replaced. The pots, switches and electronics have also been thoroughly cleaned. The cost of parts and labour exceeded £200. The overall result is a revitalised, utterly unique and beautiful-sounding guitar. You simply won't find another one like it; the pictures alone demonstrate this. I also believe that the guitar has not so much been modified as improved. And tastefully, too (i.e. not a Floyd-Rose-on-a-Gretsch scenario). There is a bit of wear and tear, but, it is, after all, an old guitar. There are mostly surface scratches and knocks -- there's nothing too serious. I would certainly say that it was in good condition for its age. I am fastidious with my guitars and I take pride in looking after them, and this guitar is no exception. The reason why I'm selling this intriguing guitar? Well, I'm moving house and there's a baby on the way: I need to raise some capital. I am certainly going to miss this guitar, purely because it plays spectacularly, it sounds tremendous, and I know for a fact that there's no other guitar like it. I am also throwing in a bag of..."stuff", I suppose. In this bag is: a brand new, uncut, black, 3-ply pickguard/scratchplate; a brand new tune-o-matic/vintage roller bridge; a black Bare Knuckle "Nailbomb" humbucker (not working -- but, it probably wouldn't take much to repair it: I just can't be bothered with it); the old pickups/tremolo/tuners for this guitar; a spare input jack; and a spare guitar nut. I hope you will enjoy this guitar as much as I have enjoyed it. Please do not hesitate to ask, if you have any questions. Many thanks for looking and good luck. |
