Instrument: Bagpipes
Brand: Peter Henderson
The set of pipes being offered here is ready to ship now!  This pipe has been identified as a set of Peter Henderson bagpipes from their combing, known history and markings.  These pipes are marked, "P.Henderson" in the cord guides of the bass drone and 1 of the tenors.  These pipes are known to be of 1940s vintage, are made of African blackwood, and have engraved, "Celtic" pattern, Hallmarked Sterling silver ferrules, slides, ringcaps, and mouthtube together with imitation ivory projecting mounts, mouthpiece bulb and bushes.  These pipes have been in the same familiy since the 1940s when they were purchased new from Peter Henderson.  (The tenors on these pipes are a perfect match so, although one is not marked Peter Henderson, it is definitely a Peter Henderson part.)
The finish on the wood on these pipes is in generally poor condition.  If this "aged" appearance is not to the buyer's liking, serious consideration should be given to a full cosmetic refurbishment.  However, the finish on the wood on these pipes only comes from extensive, honest, use.  Most importantly though, these pipes are free from any defects, warps or cracks in the African blackwood.
The imitation ivory on these pipes has suffered a few bumps in their history, the most noticeable being a chip out of the projecting mount on the bass mid-joint.  In addition to this the projecting mount on the blowstick has suffered a few "nibbles".  If of concern, these 2 projecting mounts can be replaced for minimal cost.  See photos immediately below.
These pipes were owned and played by the Pipe Major of a Northern Ireland based Grade 1 Pipe Band.  As such, you are guaranteed these pipes have been regularly played!  (These pipes have been played in The Grade 1 Final of The World Pipe Band Championships on numerous occassions.)  These pipes are completely original but have had the Hallmarked Sterling silver mounts added in 1996.  (It was at this time the imitation ivory projecting mounts were added, these pipes previously having had plain wood mounts.)  The Hallmarks on these pipes are for Birmingham 1996.  Each individual ringcap, slide, ferrule and, the mouthtube, are individually Hallmarked.

All in all this is an excellent vintage pipe with the quality of tone that can only come from an aged set of Peter Henderson pipes!

These pipes come as a set of sticks as seen pictured.  Should any additional accessories be required these can be supplied at cost.  Accessories you may wish to consider are:

  Bannantyne (Goretex/hide) zipper pipe bag - £110.00

Ezeedrone/Selbie/Balance Tone/Shepherd synthetic drone reeds - £40.00
Black Velvet pipe bag cover - £30.00
Black silk cords - £20.00
New War-Mac African blackwood pipe chanter - £140.00
NEW Wm Sinclair African blackwood pipe chanter - £250.00
Note 1 - Delivery will be made once payment has cleared.  (Payment accepted by UK cheque, by bank draft/Cashier's cheque in all major currencies and by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) through my own merchant account.)
Note to Bidders:  This is one of 5 vintage Peter Henderson sets of pipes I currently have listed, the other sets being mounted differently.  Please check my other auctions if you think these pipes might be more to your liking cosmetically.  (In terms of tone, all of these sets of pipes are exceptional.)
